Why are most clarinet cases so tiny? Why do they cost so much? It seems like there are not too many expensive materials in a clarinet case and it should not cost very much more to sell a new clarinet in a case that is adequate with more room for supplies such as swab, cork grease, extra reeds, etc.. I have to carry an extra bag for my things. It is a nuisance. Most of the new cases you can buy are also very small and the big ones cost a mint.

But the special fittings for the clarinet are the same in either a big one or a small one, so the only real difference would be size (materials that are cheap) and a bigger compartment for parts that should not be adding so much to the price. I don't want to send away by mail for something I can't see. I want to see it in the music store and judge for myself if it is sturdy and nice looking. But the music store prices around here are terrible! Over $150 for a case that looks like nothing special!

Why is that, when I can go get a hard flight case with wheels, retracting handle and several compartments, very well built for the airline baggage gorillas, and I pay $39.95? The clarinet case should cost something more because of the special fittings inside, but surely not *that* much more when it doesn't have the wheels or the retracting handle! It looks to me like there is some room for competition here. I don't need mink lined and gold plated for heaven sake! I just want a sturdy plain looking case with a good strong handle and a latch that won't flip open if you bump it a little.

I would guess that clarinet cases are so much more expensive than apparently-comparable luggage simply because instrument cases are a specialty item, with very small production numbers compared to luggage (which is made in huge quantities, generally in Asia nowadays). Small volume = high cost.
Last year I built (from scratch) a bass clarinet case, buying the hinges, latches, corners and handle from a woodworking supply mail-order company (Rockler's). It was a lot of work, and just the hardware alone was fairly expensive when added all up. So even though I got a custom case built just the way I wanted it, I certainly didn't save money compared to many store-bought cases.

On the other hand, Dave, that thing is likely to last a lifetime (though it is a tad on the heavy side :-)). How thick is the plywood stock 1/2"?

Yah, cases are expensive. I usually use a double case but had to use my Buffet single case with naugahide covering. Knowing the list price of this case I got in a bit of an argument about putting the school "bumper sticker" on it for I.D. purposes. A luggage tag would be more suitable rather than have to peeling off the sticky lable. Atleast that's what I felt.
