After reading some very good suggestions on the smallest commercially available double cases (A and Bb) for clarinet on the market (thank you,) I was wondering what people might think of something like the following:

It's a double sided 12" X 9" X 6" pistol case, which is more than adequate in size to fit on any 1 side, my larger "A" clarinet, let alone a "Bb" clarinet, including basic accessories (e.g. some reeds, grease, bells and 2 mouthpieces.)
Of course, I would need to confirm that the partition between each side is nothing but foam, as each clarinet's bell, which I would by design not place the widest part of directly above/below in the case when storing my instruments in it, is wider than the width of either equally sized side.
Searches of the board have shown some people happy with the use of such cases for their instruments, which typically feature egg crate foam on either or both sides of an instrument, that allow the instrument's pieces to stay in 1 place relative to the case, but don't bend delicate keyword either.
I'd probably want egg crate foam on both sides of an instrument, but flat foam on one side of a clarinet, and egg crate foam on the other would likely suffice.

(With jest: think of the options during 1 size clarinet auditions? The other side of the case could another kind of instrument: "an audition position changing one," not dissimilar in attributes to what the case was originally intended for. (wink)

The problem with carrying around a pistol case is both law enforcement and TSA screeners know what it is before you open it, a case for firearms. Second, would be firearm thieves also know what it is. I for one wouldn't want to be carrying around a "pistol case" as a routine matter no matter what was in it.

Thanks for your thoughts. Those are points I hadn't considered, but for me, not terribly relevant issues, making me think that this case may be a right direction for me.
Small size was an important factor for me, and I can live with only one side of the case at a time being open, as you point out Ed, agreeing it can be a hassle.
And for all I travel with them on planes Bill, which is infrequent, your thoughts would definitely prompt me to use a conventional double clarinet case when making my way through airport security with my clarinet(s) as a carry on.
The small footprint case is desired because it's destined to be inside of another non-descript case on wheels when I'm at my mere "car ride away" gigs and rehearsals, that includes a stand, stand lights, windclips, and clarinet gear, etc.
I never leave my instruments unattended, despite your point of something looking like a pistol case being attractive to gun thieves duly noted.
