I found an interesting piece while perusing the Internet called “Suite for flute, oboe, clarinet and piano” by Johan Amberg.
After downloading the free sheet music at IMSLP.org and listening to the first movement on Youtube, I thought it might be fun to give it a whirl at ensemble practice.
The Suite opens with a light and bouncy movement (Seguedille) that has interesting and fun parts all around. It sort of reminds me of a merry-go-round.
The second movement (Devant la Cathedrale), marked largo, opens with a few tough measures for the piano (bar lines would have been nice) then seemed easy enough for a while, until the rhythms seemed to fight against each (intentionally, of course). Soon I felt like the first time I drank Boone’s Farm Apple wine and had to lay down on a bed with one foot on the floor to keep the room from swimming. Yeah, I felt that dizzy.
The last movement (Ronde Villageoise) was easier on the eyes and on my “oldie” brain, with strong down beats and 16th notes, easy as pie.
As challenging as the Suite was, it was a lot of fun to play something totally unfamiliar and out of my comfort zone. That, plus I love any excuse to play with small ensembles.
BTW - As a returning musician, I find playing music today a whole lot more fun than it was for me back in the day 33 years ago. Now I just love searching the Internet for free music and/or listening to it on YouTube to get some idea of what it sounds like before I decide if I want to give it a go. I also love all the websites with lessons and tips offered by great clarinetists. I know what an effort that music be and I am so appreciative.
Anyway, I'm having too much fun and just wanted to share.
