 Legere reeds for Alto?
Author: HANGARDUDE

I have been using Legere Signature reeds on the Bb clarinet and I found them particularly great for jazz and blues. As I am planning to do some of the same genre on alto and German bass(which also uses alto reeds) clarinets, I couldn't find any Legere alto clarinet reeds. As I know only some of the alto sax reeds would work for alto clarinets(and presumably German basses), I'd like to ask what Legere reed series would you think would work on the alto clarinet? Standards, Studio, or Signature?

I use a Signature Alto Sax Legere reed on my alto clarinet. I mainly play classical, though, not jazz.

The strengths for Legere signature alto sax reeds are similar to wood reed strengths but the Legere standard reeds are a lot harder, so I normally play a #3 but a #3 Legere standard alto sax reed was too hard to play. A #3 Signature plays well for me.

Anton, I am a crossover player myself. I mainly play the Romantic reperatoire, as well as rhythmic bass(on bass clarinet) in an acoustic band. Recently more and more people requested me to play jazz for them, though I don't often play it. My Vandoren wooden reeds sound too stark for such a purpose, while I tried Legere reeds and found them great for Jazz and other lighter genres. Thank you for your advice! I'll get some alto signatures soon.

I bought a Legere Studio 2.5 which was too hard for me for alto sax, but too soft for use on alto clarinet or basset horn. I scraped and sanded it down to make it the same strength as a Vandoren red Java alto sax 2.5 for use on alto sax.

I use alto sax signature 2.75 on my alto clarinet. They are fabulous ! Much better than a cane reed that can warp very badly on the big clarinets.
