Hello, first time poster so excuse me if I discuss a topic already addressed on the BBoard. I've recently been mixing up my setup as I'm in a transition period from a high school band into a college ensemble and I need some advice.
I'm looking to try out some new reeds. I used to play on Vandoren strength 3 traditional reeds but switched to Rico Grand Concert (Traditional blank) about three months ago and am just finishing the last box I had. I tried a couple of the thick blanks and I think I like them better, but my local store didn't have any in stock so I stuck with the traditional ones.
I'm currently playing with a Vandoren M30 mouthpiece with a Rovner ligature on a old-school German Buffet E11 (I'm also in the process of buying an R13 but that's another story). I was thinking about trying some Gonzalez reeds like the FOF or RC and am looking for more suggestions. I'm looking for something that will fit my current setup, and I know trying them for myself is the only way I'll get a definite answer, but any suggestions on what to try are very much appreciated.

Give the Legere reeds a try ... it will take some experimentation to determine the cut and strength. Not sure what works with M30, probably the signature cut ... but I've used regular cut Legere #3 on my M30-lyres ... now using "blue box" #3 and #3.5. Gone full circle on my reeds ... used Vandorens 45 years ago ...
I have suspicions that the Legere reeds generally work better on closer facing MPs like the M13, M13-lyre and M15.

I like the thick blanks also. Buy them from a mail order store, you can get them cheaper if you buy a few boxes at a time to make up for the shipping charge. Muncy Winds is a good place but there are several others as well.

Just purchased a Walter Grabner K11* mouthpiece and am having a lot of success of recent Forestone model reeds as well as a couple of Harry Hartmann Fiber carbon models. It has a closer facing and I think that is "key". Waiting to secure some Legere Sigs as well. And curiously, although I will never completely go back, some of my older V12's play pretty good as well.
For those of you that know me as the "Forestone Guy" on this BB, I am still using those reeds exclusively for my serious performances. They simply sound better than any other synthetic reed I've tried, but that doesn't mean I am not above trying "whats out there". Give synthetics a try--what very little you give up in sound, you are rewarded in lack of cane hassles--conditioning, balancing, moistening, short play life, etc. My Forestones are always ready to play and never give up half way through the gig. They let me play the music without worrying about playing the reed. And Walter's great mouthpiece now makes it even better..........

Try some of the reeds Clark Fobes offers on his website. I've had a lot of success with the Pilgerstorfer Dolces, and more recently the Morrés. I've heard good things about the Leuthners too. Clark Fobes offers sample packs of different reed cuts for comparison.

You didn't mention having used V12s. Many folks I know have great success with the M30 and the Vandoren V12s.

Reeds is a personal matter that requires experimentation. I like the Rico Reserve better than Vandoren (V12, RL, Blue) and the Legree Signature reeds, which means little, if any, to you.
The only way to know is to try, which means for roughly $100 you can get a representative sample of each of the main offerings.
What you don't like, keep around as back up, maybe you change your mind down the road or just give away for good karma.

Hi , I'm just an amateur playing for about 4 years .
I've tried various MPc and reed combinations , and found that the M30 is best for me , in cane I liked Rico Thick Blank best , but had been playing on V12 3 and 31/2 . until I started off with Leger.
I play now on M30 and Legere Signature 31/2 , which I love so much . I went on playing on V12 3s for some time , but after a while I realised that for me the Legere gives me much more pleasure , and I dont see myself going back to cane , What I like about the Legere, is not just the fact that you just place it on the MP and start practising, in humid places or dry places without any difference to tone and playability , but the also because I get beautiful tone and resonance out of these reeds and the dont change from day to day..
