We can make jokes of our metal clarinets. How thyre so out of tune and how Benny Goodman used one to scare mice away but can you imagine a metal oboe?

Yes, I saw a glass oboe at a "great mansion" [castle] in England [Leeds?] several years ago. Don

No doubt people thought the same about metal flutes when they were introduced first.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but it looks like it has the german clarinet fingering system?

No it is a Boehm system but the sax version of it. It is the rollers on the little finger keys that is deceiving you. Saxes use rollers as do flutes for the little finger keys.

The right hand finger layout is the clue it. On a german system, the lower joint (starting at the top) would be finger plate, covered hole, finger plate, finger plate. The Boehm system would be covered hole, and then three finger plates in a row.

Joseph,
Not all metal clarinets play out of tune just as all wood clarinets don't play in tune. Think about it.

I have restored metal clarinets that have been very nice in both design and intonation. Were you aware that Haynes (yes, same as the famous flute maker) made a metal clarinet? Selmer also made a professional metal clarinet that is very nice (sterling).

I'm sure Benny could have scared mice away with some of them, but he could have scared them away with a poorly made wood one as well.

John
