Rachmaninoff - Variations on a Theme of Corelli

Good day, clarinets. I come with a slight predicament regarding the Variations on a Theme of Corelli.

Short and sweet, I'm not quite sure how the part is arranged. I have been assigned the bass clarinet part. Unfortunately, the bass clarinet music is completely and totally in bass clef. For anyone who's got experience with this type of deal, or if you've played it before, especially the arrangement by Dumbraveanu, how exactly do you transpose the music?

My music says "Clarinetto Basso in Si ♭". I assume the arranger didn't quite understand that bass clarinet doesn't read in bass clef. But did the arranger already put the notes in the correct key? Or did they give me concert pitch bass clef music? I can't post it because I think the arrangement is still copyrighted in the US. I understand that it's difficult for anyone to really say since they can't see the music, but given this information, what do you think? Especially if you're familiar with the piece, my key signature has one sharp.

I would hate to write everything out in Finale to only find out at the first rehearsal that my transposition in to treble clef was completely and totally wrong.

Actually, bass clarinetists *are* expected to read in bass clef. Wagner, Shostakovich and Dukas, to name a few, used bass clef.

To answer your question, the part does not need to be transposed (other than changing the clef). If you see any notation in treble clef, it needs to be played up an octave.

Look up "French notation" and "German notation" for bass clarinet and you will find a plethora of discussions.

WRT copyright issues, should be no issue to show a couple of measures as a fair use sample, just so somebody else here can say, "Yep, that's what you play.", or "No, you need to transpose." Especially show the key signature and instrument name (may need to do 2 or 3 little pieces).

Anyone here disagree about this being "fair use"? I'm about as far from being a lawyer or expert on the subject as possible. But I would think even if the copyright holder saw it, they'd be glad you were being careful.
