Case for bass clarinet and BC stand
Author: Dm Zisl

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a very high quality, pretty much indestructible bass clarinet case (Wiseman or Wiseman-grade) that would accommodate both my low C bass and any bass clarinet stand that is accessible in the market today. Would one of those Wiseman Bass Clarinet cases (model A, B, C, soprano sax + BC, etc) work?

The K&M bass cl/ bassoon stand's dimensions when folded are pretty close to those of the soprano clarinet, but again, I can't tell this for sure without measuring and fitting. I know that someone here has been mentioning using such a combo with a modified drum tripod or something, but that wouldn't work for me, I don't know where to shop for such tripods and where to get them modified.

I am well aware of those possibilities to have your case custom made according to your specifications by whatever reputable manufacturer out of best materials available, but the CUSTOMness of such case, I am afraid, will significantly reduce the resale value, should I want to sell that (quite pricey) case.

Thank you in advance.

Any? Really? That would be a huge case.

>> The K&M bass cl/ bassoon stand's dimensions when folded are pretty close to those of the soprano clarinet <<

K&M makes two models, one with a smaller cup and one with a bigger cup. I have the one with bigger cup and when folded it is much bigger than a soprano clarinet.

I have a Wiseman case and my impression (I didn't check) is that the bigger cup K&M stand won't fit at all... not even close. Maybe the smaller cup model could fit, if there was no instrument in the soprano clarinet side of the case, but I really don't know (I think it won't but it's just a guess).

Your best option might be to have a custom (or non-custom) case for the stand and find a way to attach it to whatever bass clarinet case you have.

Re the resale value issue, for something specific it is a good idea to forget about resale value. If this is something you really want that much, IMO just be willing to accept that you might lose the total cost.

Thank you for your reply!
You might be right, you can't have everything at once. And I should go with a custom case. After all, should I decide to sell it, it's not such a weird combination that no one can use. Or— no custom case and no stand, and just use chairs or case top to rest the bass when on tour, except the pit works, of course.

I'm just wondering how other bass clarinetists fly, presumably with the stands? Or — is everyone carrying the stand in their suitcase? or otherwise? Does what I want to have sound too exotic/ weird?

Dm,

I think you are asking for one case to do too much. Take a lesson from drummers. They have all these cases for different pieces of equipment; maybe you need the solid BC case (which could be resold at some point) and an "equipment" case.

Sometimes totally unrelated cases or bags can do a yeoman's job when re-purposed. I work with a drummer that uses a hard shell golf case for all his cymbal stands and other pieces of equipment that are longer. It's heavy but it has rollers.

For a pit job for me as doubler, I have a duffel bag or use a back pack for stands, small woodwind cases, etc. Since the Reed II or IV is varied, I can accommodate just about anything. Check our roller duffel bags!

In that case I would find a case for the stand a attach it to the bass clarinet case. A tripod bag might work. You might be able to attach it to the clarinet case straphooks, or maybe also add a pocket for the bottom of the stand case to get into (like some camera bags have for tripods).

Especially if you don't ALWAYS need both clarinet and stand it might be a hassle to have that huge case for both, either unecessarily carrying it or just taking space when not.

>> I'm just wondering how other bass clarinetists fly <<

I would probably not take the stand with me. Or I'd put it in another checked bag/suitcase. Or if I don't have space for it, just don't bring it and use a chair (or whatever is available). If you need the stand to save space on stage, I guess it"s a big group and then there are usually a lot of instruments combined in cases (or something similar) and no problem finding space for the stand somewhere.
A stand like the K&M is very durable, even if you drop it without a bag it's unlikely that anything would happen to it. I wouldn't be concerened even putting it in a (maybe padded) bag and just check it as another bag.

Wow, thanks a million, Hank, this is definitely a fresh look on the problem. I am now very much prone to going that way.

Dear clarnibass,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and your advice. This all makes total sense to me. I am now really leaving the initial idea of the BC+stand case behind. Way too bulky, heavy, etc., etc.

Decided to go with Wiseman model A and then hook anything I need to it or just have the stand checked, alone or in a suitcase/ bag.
Thank you so much colleagues for your advice!

One last thought. I picked up a USAF helmet bag "knock-off" a little while back. If is about 18" x 18", has a double strap handle, two small inside pocket, two large outside pockets, the inner part has a very nice liner while the outside is rugged and there is hook.

OK, the bag is single stitched where as a government-issue unit would be much sturdier. However, for about $23, how can you go wrong. I have the traditional OD44 (brings back my US Army days) but black or camo is available as well.

Hank
