 clarinet violin duets

I have a friend who took up violin as an adult and classifies herself as intermediate. Other than playing duets with her teacher, she has no other ensemble experience. We may have somewhat foolishly decided to attempt some duets. I thought we would start with the Voxman clarinet flute duet books. I have spent all my time (a goodly number of years) in high school and community bands with a bit of woodwind choir time but have never played with string instruments. I would appreciate any input on what intonation issues we might face and also any general observations. Thanks!

How about, for an easy but rewarding beginning, Mozart's Kegelduette? Here a sample of an adaptation for violin and Cl. (I once played them with my granddaughter).

When the clarinet and violin are close together, as in a passage of thirds, I find that sometimes the difference frequencies at what I assume are the higher harmonic levels are a little grating, especially in the upper part of the clarinet tessitura. And then there's always the issue of playing in tune with a heavily vibrato-laden violin tone, especially unisons. The vibrato issue may be greater with an "intermediate" violinist who may not have complete control of her vibrato (assuming she has added it to her arsenal).

Then there are, of course, the usual pitch issues that a clarinetist needs to deal with in any ensemble situation - possibly sharp throat and high clarion tones, flat low chalumeau notes, general pitch accuracy in the altissimo register (where the difference frequencies can be really intense), etc....

Not very different from any ensemble playing, but you can hear the problems better than in a band or orchestra.

I first read that as "duels" not "duets". Perhaps that is closer to the truth. Seriously though, I like these kind of endeavors, and I think you will both learn something you wouldn't have gotten any other way.

Thanks! You guys (and gals) are the best! Music to play and for my dogs to howl at! And I have no doubt it will be educational! Thanks again!

I'd suggest playing the Suite for Clarinet, Violin and Piano by Darius Milhaud. The 3rd movement, 'Jeu' is a duet between Clarinet and Violin. Very nice and tuneful.

Try duets for flute and clarinet. These often work out well and you can find them in all difficulty levels.
