Losing Dexterity In The Right Hand
Author: Johnny Galaga

Over the last 2 - 3 years, I've gradually lost dexterity in the right fingers and cannot control them as well as in the past. The left hand is fine, in fact the left finger seem to have very good control over technical passages. But playing anything on the bottom half of the instrument is a struggle like it never used to be. It seems to be getting a little worse every six months or so. Technical passages that used to be playable are now a struggle in the right hand.

For example, the right index finger sometimes pops up and won't stay covering the tone hole while moving other right fingers. Another problem is not being able to move the middle and ring fingers at the same time to get a clean slur. The overall strength in the right hand feels weaker and getting the right index finger to work independently from the middle finger feels almost impossible. Both fingers always want to follow each other and I can't anything evenly.

I've basically been a community amateur player off and on after playing from 6th grade through 2 years of college and never had this much trouble with technique in the right hand before. But it's gotten so bad now, I basically can barely play anything and will probably have to give it up and stop playing soon. So what gives? Has anyone else had anything like this happen before?

I'd recommend consultation with a neurologist for a nerve conduction study, EMG (electromyogram) and blood tests (including vitamin B12 level).

Keep us posted on your progress. None of us are getting younger. I hope you don't mind a few prayers aimed your way.

Sounds as though you may have something like carpal tunnel syndrome. I have it, and the symptoms are exactly as you describe. It's easily operable and recovery is fairly straightforward. I had my left hand done a few years back, and I'll get the right done early next year. Check with your GP.

Talk to a neurologist ASAP. Those symptoms could range from something correctible (eg. carpal tunnel -- mentioned above) to the beginning of a serious neurological problem. You need to have the problem addressed by someone qualified to diagnose and treat it. Good luck.
