 Writing out serial numbers
Author: jdbassplayer

Hello all,
I have a question about serial numbers. It seems like whenever somebody (myself included) writes about an instrument online it is usually written like this: "I have a clarinet with the serial number 30****..." My question is what danger is there in writing out the full serial number? Is this just something everyone does without thinking about or is there a good reason for it? I mean it's not like a credit card number or social security number. Nobody's going to steal your identity based off what clarinet you play. Perhaps there is something obvious I am missing.
All opinions are appreciated!

Maybe I'm oldfashioned, certainly old, but I am firmly in the camp of restricting the amount of detailed personal data put out on the net to minimum possible.

You just never know who might use it, and for what purpose.

Insurance fraudsters could make use of existing full serial numbers claiming that an instrument with a specific published serial number is theirs or one they've had stolen or lost.

The only clarinet I've published the full serial number on here was my 1965 B&H Series 2-20 which was stolen while I was at college back in 1989 - the serial number on that is 234701.

On the flip side, whenever I've sold a clarinet (or camera or computer or whatever) on eBay, I've always shown the serial number in the photos. That might discourage the possible fraud of a buyer returning a different one (whether or not they claimed what I sold was defective).
