I have been using the Clark Fobes Debut for a while and was curious what's a good mouthpiece for me to try next.

If the Debut works for you, the Vandoren M30 might be worth a try.

Vandoren M13-Lyre or Fobes San Francisco.
If you tend towards harder reeds, try a Vandoren M15

Try some of Clark Fobes's other mouthpieces. I'm using a Clark Fobes CWF and I love it. I've never tried the Debut, so I'm not sure how it compares to the CWF feel-wise.

Fobes' stuff is great! If you like the debut I would not fool around with Vandoren and just move to another Fobes. I personally am a big fan of the Cicero (if you're into the more "compact" style of mouthpieces). If you are willing to spend more money, I highly, highly HIGHLY recommend the Smith mouthpieces. Not only is Greg Smith a fantastic mouthpiece maker, he is a great resource.

Thanks so much for the replies. I looked at his website and was surprised nobody mentioned his Nova. Based on my reading of the Nova's description, it sounds just like the Debut but in hard rubber.

You beat me to it. I have the Nova bass piece and love it. Clark wrote me that it has the same facing as the Debut (but maybe some different inner shape? I don't know)
With a bass and its big reed I welcome the additional heft of a hard rubber mouthpiece.

Nova's are nice, the San Francisco's are better.
But for a bass clarinet, yes, a Nova.

Thanks again! I'm thinking a Nova or even a San Francisco with the CF+ facing (same as Debut) is the way to go.
What reeds are the best for it? I'm currently using standard Ricos. I know I definitely need another brand! (I ask because I understand that certain reeds and reed strengths are better for certain mouthpieces).

If I were upgrading from a Debut, and had the money, I'd go CF+. It is a great mouthpiece and the same concept/facing as the Debut. At the same time, don't be in a hurry, the Debut is a great player.
BTW- the name is Fobes

My instructor started me out on a Clark Fobes, then had me use a Vandoren M30. She says the M30 requires more breath, but creates a deeper sound. I like the sound the Vandoren M30 produces more, it's a great mouthpiece!

I am curious about the differences between the Fobes Debut and his 10k mouthpieces. I have a Debut, and I have considered upgrading.
If they are both a CF+ facing, do they play very differently?

There is a considerable difference because of the material used and the amount of hand finishing and refinement in the 10K. The Debut is a fine playing mouthpiece, but no comparison. The 10K is one of the best mouthpieces I have played. It would be like comparing an entry level car to a high end luxury car.

A more up-market Fobes. Nobody knows more about clarinet acoustics than Clark. He's bound to retire someday, so get one before they disappear!

Hi Robert,
I have the Debut and the 10k CF and I have tried a San Francisco CF+
For me it is really hard to get the Debut to respond. I really have to work at it and it's not worth using that mp at all for me. The 10K CF for me is amazing and responds immediately to the slightest breath. It produces an incredibly focussed sound and is a total dream to play.
I absolutely agree about the 10k feeling like a high end luxury car. I had no idea it could be so easy to play until I tried that mp. I would not switch now, having discovered it.
The San Francisco CF+ was also very very nice but was not quite right for me. I can't quite remember what the difference was but there was a clear difference between the two.
There's a load of information on this thread that might be useful:
