 10 out of 10
Author: GBK
Date:   2014-08-12 22:30

I opened a new box of Vandoren traditional reeds and got the rare "10 out of 10" box.

Sorry to hear that 9 of you will soon be getting the "0 out of 10" box.

My condolences. :)

Has anyone ever documented this happening before? It's like a perfect game on strikeouts.

I went something like 0-200 on Vandorens back in the Fall of '99. But my guess is that's far more common.

Back before I went over (mostly) to synthetic reeds (Forestone), I use to buy a box of 10 Rico Royal or Michelle Lurie and hardly ever had the situation where I could not use ALL of the reeds. Yes, there was the occasional reed that seemed to be not as good as the rest , but even those I could use with a slight 'touch up'.
Sounds like Vandoren reeds are 'second rate'

You must quit while you're ahead, GBK, and give up the clarinet entirely, right now.

If you haven't already started playing oboe, now's the time :)

DS,

No, the bassoon. Oboe probably has just too much back pressure for GBK.

He's going to talk for the rest of his life about "that box of reeds I got in August 2014". Because it will NEVER happen again. [grin]

GBK: Perhaps the facing on your mouthpiece has somehow changed. Vandoren's quality control department would never have let 10 good reeds go out in a single box of 25, let alone 10.

Ursa- that's just mean. [grin]

I'm just about to open a new box of 10 blues myself. My reed choices are still up in the air- Gonzalez GD have fallen out of favor for the moment. 10 nice playable blues would definitely swing me in their direction. We will see.

Have the reeds bronzed for posterity - or you could wait until they have reached their useful life first.

Maybe we should bronze the bad reeds since some are only useful for decorative purposes anyway.

With the odds you've just beaten, you probably could have been dealt a royal flush.

When I used to use Vandoren bass clarinet reeds I would use anywhere from 8-12 boxes a year of ten to a box. Sometimes going through 3 boxes to find a few good ones. Once I began using Rico Grand Concerts, because they sent me a few to try years ago, I would use 3-4 boxs of five to a box, a year. I would almost always find a few good ones to use and they would last me a very long time. I've actually had some Grand Concerts last for six months playing it at almost every rehearsal and concert, praticing on others.
Then I began using their Bb reeds and was almost equally successful. Always finding at least a few good ones in a box and they would last longer. Of course the way I broke them in and cared for them helped a great deal.

7 days ago I started MY new box of 10 Vandoren blues. This is not the same situation as I expect, say, 5 boxes from now- since I have been vacillating between brands and models. This box was a good experience, and my playing and ATG adjusting are getting better- I am pretty happy with how things are going- so perhaps I am settling down... I sure hope so.

With all that said--- I am still working with all 10 out of this box of blues. They're not all equal, but it shifts day to day which ones are best and which are worst. And all are playable. After they all completely stabilize, we'll see whether I want to set any aside.

Perhaps Vandoren QC is better than it used to be. So much for a premium price for "vintage" Vandoren reeds on that auction site.

Update- after 47 days. I have rejected 3 from that box of 10 Vandoren blues, and am still working with 7 of them. From what I read on BBoard I suppose 70% is respectable, and I would be doing well to maintain it.

2 of the rejects were just kind of dead- "too much damping" in engineering speak, the other one just refused to balance properly. Perhaps one of Tom's more advanced ATG techniques would fix it, but I keep my ATG work simple these days. Life's too short to throw good effort after bad on a $2 reed.
