How many clarinets do you own?
Author: Shelly
Date: 2001-04-16 16:29

I am curious to see how many clarinets every one has! I only own one :( It's a Selmer CL300. Money is very tight around our house so unless I see one at a yard sale I doubt if I will get a second any time soon.

Humm, good question. Depends on the day. Play regularly a Buffet, and an AMATI 201 for outdoor use, i have a shelf full of other AMATI clarinets, and technically they are mine. I have a selmer bass clarinet, a box full of caseless plastic horns, and 2 older wood horns.

I own a 4-year old Leblanc Concerto which I play most of the time.
What I don't own is a gorgeous Yamaha pro-eefer which I have played one concert on. It belongs to an old friend of mine who doens't play anymore and hitherto, the eefer has been sitting on her shelves!
The owner and I have a verbal agreement that the eefer shall be with me on 'permanent loan' until I can be of a financial status that will allow me to acquire it for my own. Sigh..

On the "restoration bench":
More than a dozen older wood clarinets, various "off brands" (sic)

Interesting thread. I have a vintage R-13 (about 1954), an Evette by Buffet which is better than the R-13, a Hoffinger A, a Bundy Eb, and a 1925 full Boehm Bb.

What my wife wants to know is "how many clarinets are enough?"

I have nine clarinets from the same builder, all hand-made by the legendary Fritz Wurlitzer.
Here we go:
A/B flat set with the Schmidt-Kolbe system (very complicated key work with a wide bore: 15,0 mm) from 1952
A/B flat set with the traditional full Oehler system, still older from 1946.
A/ B flat set with the reform Boehm keywork
Eefer from 1972, German System
Basset horm from 1974, Oehler system
Bass clarinet from 1964, full German system till low C
I'm playing all instruments with great pleasure. I'm allways seeking for the ideal mouthpieces (Wurlitzer Fritz and Herbert, Zinner, all with Heinz Viotto facings) for these oldies with hand forged keywork, made with so much love and craftmanship.

The Leblanc Symphonie would be around 50 years old. I have the successor to it, a Leblanc Symphonie II, and according to Leblanc, mine was manufactured in the early to mid 1950s. Therefore yours should be late 1940s to early 1950s.

I have my lovely Yamaha 20 for marching...it's 14. I also have my wonderful Yamaha Allegro...it's one year old as of yesterday.

That's two...but I also have 2 school contraltos (plastic bundy, 35 years or so, wooden selmer, who knows how old it is), a bass clarinet (40 or so), and a bari sax (probably as old as the wooden selmer) in my possesion. Do they count?

Oh by the way, I have a bass guitar (5 months), that's off the topic, but I would hate for my guitar to think that I was favoring my reed instruments.

I've been learning clarinet for about six months. I have a Buffet R-13, a Yamaha YCL-20, a metal Regent Soloist. My newest acquisition, via eBay, is a no-name vintage Albert C horn. I am thrilled with the C horn, cracks and all. I have to admit that it is my favorite.

I am watching eBay for a Bb Albert horn, and I want to get a nice Boehm style C horn.

Right now I own three working high quality clarinets.
My main Bb is a Buffet R-13 Festival clarinet which I bougt new less than a year ago. These instruments are unbeatable in quality. The alternate Eb key is useful when I make a mistake in a fingering pattern while sightreading. I own an R-13 in the key of A which I bought even newer. My back-up Bb is an 'Evette/Buffet "Master Model' clarinet circa. late 50's early 60's. I do not belive that this was an equivilant to the modern E-11 but rather an R-13 with a cosmetic flaw or an R-13 made with lesser grade wood but still equal to the wood of a modern R-13. In any case I restored it myself. I hang on to old "junker" clarinets for parts.
From my high-school I use an 1980's vintage R-13 Eb. LeBlanc Bass and Alto clarinet and when I need, a LeBlanc Contra-Bass with range to low C.

Five clarinets:

Buffet R-13 Bb
Buffet R-13 A
Selmer Signet 100
Vito Plastic
Bundy Plastic

Used to have a small collection of old albert system clarinets, some extra plastics, and a full boehm extended range Leblanc A kept for about a year while I was transcribing viola repertoire to clarinet...everything went the way of Ebay though, and the remaining three "cheap" horns are of sentimental value.

The next question ought to be: how many mouthpieces do you have, and why in the world does anyone need that many for? =)

Okay! Okay!

I have a used Vito model 7214 (the one with the simulated woodgrain finish) in excellent condx. that cost me $239+shipping. And I still have the same wife I've had for 43+ years. Wonder how much I can get out of her on a new Concerto (note: must phone LeBlanc).

"...simulated woodgrain finish...."
Hummm! Just realized something in that statement. Architects (which I am BTW) don't like simulated wood or any other simulated material............hummm (idea!).

I'm gonna get into big trouble.........bye.

Not many--

Selmer Series 10 Mazzeo (1971)
Bundy Mazzeo (1968)
Artley that I just bought on Ebay a few weeks ago.

I'm always looking for more Mazzeos.

Now my husband--he has a room full of saxophones--sopranos and Altos. He just got a new Yamaha Custom Alto this weekend, and he's driving me crazy playing it all his waking hours!

Let me see. maybe not quite as many as some of the others, but a sufficient number none the less:
~Buffet Festival, for my main concert horn
~Artley horn that is osmewhere in circulation at the middle school, as the tone quality and key work are very poor
~Plastic Vito, from my beginnings, that took all the way through the first two and a half years of playing paid probably 95 bucks for it
~Plastic Vito, a lot newer than my beginner and used for marching band, and its the horn I keep out all the time with a spare setup so I can piddle around whenever
Oh and all of these are Bflat as I have not yet hadthe oppurtunity to try any of the others, which I'm hoping to do one of these days! But I do have a good sized collection of "stuff" mouthpieces ligatures and all that! I'm sure once I get out of high school I might look into my clarineting stuff, but right now my buget is limited to that of a high school student!
Sara :)

Lets see, A Harry Pedler, hard rubber with extra keys (1920s); another Harry Pedler, wood about 1936; a Jeffrey thats just old but plays great; a Freeman M-100 that I play the most; a plastic Bundy; 3 metal clarinets, an Olds, an Elkhart and a Holton. Also a Leblanc contra alto (actualy belongs to the local school), a Conn alto sax, a Yammie tenor sax, a Reynolds double French horn, a Martin trombone (1920s), a King euphonium, and an old Eb tuba. These are the playable horns. The clunkers and junkers are in a big box somewhere.

After 30 years of tooting on the Olds Duratone plastic student model my parents scrimped to get me in 1970, I began to aquire last year.

First was an Evette & Schaeffer (a wonderful bright-sounding intermediate horn) then a Signet Soloist (a wonderful dark-sounding intermediate horn). Next, a friend dumped on me a Bundy with barely a pad on it (it's at the bottom of the pile). I have a hard-rubber Evette bass with a neck customized by Dave Spiegelthal and a two-piece Vito alto as well as a Signet Special I plan to sell.

I've paid for (but haven't yet gotten) two more intermediate horns -- a Noblet and an Evette.

It's not a clarinet, but I also own & play a lap dulcimer.

Some of you are amazing. I only have one that "counts", a Vito. I know people think "just plastic" but really it's pretty good and I can play it outdoors with no worries about weather. No complaints. I would like to get something better I guess but it can wait for more "disposable income".

I have another one that doesn't count because I never play it. It is an Artley that was my first clarinet that I owned myself instead of a school isntrument. It belonged to my aunt who gave it to me so I shouldn't say anything bad about it except, oh my God it is terrible. You can't play it in tune to save your life. No wonder she played two years and quit! The notes above the break are way sharp and below the break way flat. The repair man said there is really nothing you can do about it. Anything you do to fix one thing makes the other one worse. I was so glad when my parents gave me the Vito brand new for my 13'th birthday when I was going in high school, that I broke down and cried! But now I'm glad for playing the Artley because it made me grateful for the Vito and appreciate it instead of desperate to keep up with the Joneses. I did get a better mouthpiece this year so now I have 2 plus the one on the Artley that doesn't count!

I almost only had 1 clarinet because offered the Artley to my nephew to carry on the family tradition. But his band teacher played it and said no way, take it back where it came from! He wanted a trumpet instead of a clarinet anyway so he got his wish.

When my kids and grandkids ask [The Question], I usually respond that "They are like rabbits, I havent counted them this morning!!" A guesstimate of 50 instruments seems to be in the ballpark [I plead guilty of being a collector as well as a multi-player] and I'm not trying to be #1 or establish my own museum, just love horns. Probably 40 are clarinets of varying size/keys, about 10 are ?antiques?, and most are somewhat [or better] playable. If anyone is interested in further description [and my idiocy!], I'll see what I can do. Really enjoy this thread!!! Don

I don't really own one, but a single yamaha plastic horn lives in my appartemant as a part of a rental program. My very first clarinet was a wooden thing, bought for what equals about 50-60 US dollars, and quickly sold again; it was in a pretty bad shape, leaking everywhere - - but it made me fall in love with the instrument, so I decided to get a decent beginner's horn ASAP.

Then I own a couple of recorders, a mandolin, a guitar, an old, broken but playable bouzouki and a baglama (baby bouzouki) - but that's another story; the clarinet is what I invest my musical hours in.

Kontragirl,
I spied a Yamaha Allegro at a local store this weekend. It
certainly is a beautiful CL! It played pretty well, and the price seemed right.
I can tell you like it, but can you tell me any more? There is no information on the Yamaha web page.

Anybody else out there have experience with this model?
