 Alto Clarinet "donut pad"

I was refurbushing my latest Bundy Alto acquisition and got to the upper section third finger key with the tiny hole. I removed it there was this cruddy hard felt pad with a corresponding hole in it. I cleaned the pad and considered replacing it but wondered if I could punch a hole in a regular leather pad using a trouser belt punch I had. Well, the punch worked and made a perfect hole and I installed it and so far it's working just fine. I do wonder what others have done about those felt "donut" pads. (Thanks Ben)

I usually replace with an oboe style cork pad. Not so easy to install but long lasting once correctly in place.
Possible problem with putting hole in leather pad is if water gets into the hole and then inside the pad.

I fit cork pads to any perforated fingerplates on woodwinds (with the exception of flutes) instead of leather ones with a hole punched through them as cork is a solid material as opposed to a leather pad which is made of three layers so can potentially cause a leak.

A Valentino pad or some other synthetic pad also works nicely

Thanks all. I did coat the I.D. of the hole with superglue to help prevent moisture problems.

Jim: I'm still working on detecting and correcting what I think are leaks in the upper part of the horn.
