 Buffet, 60 years old?
Author: Danielle
Date:   2001-04-15 02:22

ok, another question. i have a buffet clarinet, recently restored and given to me for my bat mitzvah last august. i'm not really sure which model it is, or if they make it anymore, but it's about 60 years old. i don't know if buffet makes the model anymore, but it doesn't have an identification number on it, or any sign of what the model is. if anyone wants a picture of it (if it may help identify it), then email me and i might be able to scan one in and send it to you, and if you have any idea of what model it is, then please email me, i'd really like to know. thanks!

is there any numbers on it? any other identifying marks?
if you have a number off of it ( ser num ) there is a ser number section to this site, and it might tell you what you want to know....

If it is a Buffet, it will have said Buffet on it. It will also have a serial number on it. If it is too faint, take it out into bright sunlight to read it. From the serial number, you can find the age from the serial number list here on sneezy as others have mentioned.

This is usually, but not always true. I have an old Buffet (which the folks at Buffet say was manufactured by them in 1926) which has no serial number on it at all, anywhere. I had to contact Buffet to have it dated.

Now that is most unusual. Did they say why there was no serial number?

Another way to read the logo is to rub a gold crayon up and down, then side to side where the logo is.

Buffets have made Evette-Schaffer's before and they are comparable to the R-13 before R-13's were in production. Just a thought.

Rob and Dee -

If Rob's instrument has no serial number, how did the people at Buffet date it, particularly to the precise year of 1926? The Sneezy serial number table shows 1S877 - 1S999 for that year.

I had never seen a Buffet without a serial number until about a month ago, when I came across one at Rod Baltimore's store in New York. He's calling it a clarinet in D, but it's actually a high-pitch C, as measured by a tuner and compared with my 1928 Buffet C, which show it playing perfectly in tune at a little less than a quarter step above 440. It plays superbly and is in good condition except for a crack in the upper socket of the barrel. He wants too much for it (over $1,000), though I might have gotten it if it had been at low pitch.

It's definitely a Buffet. The trademark is the right design and size, and the keys match the details on mine, including the hand-forged profiles.

I looked *very* closely, in sunlight and with a powerful flashlight, and there was definitely no serial number at the bottom of the lower joint, where it is on my C. The other spot for serial numbers on instruments of that vintage is the top of the upper joint, but there was nothing there, and my own C is blank on the upper joint. The bottom of the upper joint on Rod's horn is slightly flattened on the back, so a serial number could have been removed there, but why would anyone do that? And anyway, that wouldn't explain the absence of a number on the lower joint.

The wood is definitely not grenadilla. It looks like rosewood.

Do you know whether Buffet was making Boehm keywork prior to 1885, when the serial number chart starts? Maybe so, which would explain the different wood and the high pitch. (I'm ordering the Buffet history book, so maybe that will solve the mystery.)

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

Mr. Shaw,
I was very interested when I read about this Buffet with the missing serial numbers. I hope someone can solve this mystery because I also have an old Buffet that is exactly as you describe. I've had the instrument since I started band in middle school and it's sat in the closet since 1984. The only identification marks that I can see is a stamp on each piece that reads Buffet on top, then Cromnon and Cre ( I think?), then A paris, and finally on the bottom it says made in Paris France. I no longer consider myself to be a clarinet player but I am a guitar player and I'm pretty sure I recognize rosewood when I see it and this clarinet sure looks like it's made out of rosewood to me. At any rate, I would be grateful for any information that you can forward to me concerning my old clarinet.

Thanks in advance

Since it was H. Klose and August Buffet working together who developed and apllied the Boehm system for the clarinet and since the Boehm clarinet was developed in the 1840s, I'd say Buffet was making them prior to 1885.

I also have a BC with a "1" serial number, its so dificult to see I thought had none.

I guess its around 1930 maybe early. I bought it with a no barrel Thibouville Freres in France witch also makes me think its quite old.

The logos is also not well engraved. Plays very good.

Looks like grenadille (very dark). Is NOT rosewod.

*** I Dont trust (100%) BC website for serial numbers : year. Its limitated and WITH errors.

I own two Buffets numbered in the 90,000 series that makes them about 50 years old, give or take. Back then they only made the one model professional clarinet for mass sale, the R 13. There is no name on them other then Buffet and a serial number on both the major joints. Any other model would be a student model and it would have another name of the model on it as well. Some would evern say sponsored by Buffet.

Definitely, there are 1850's-1860's Buffet Boehms with salt spoon pad cups, brass keys, etc... and there are even other companies that made them in boxwood mid 19th century. I have a Jerome Thibouville Lamy Boehm system that was made around 1880.
