 Concert Band Repertoire

I'm on the hunt for some really neat concert band music for my high school band this year. I'm looking for something with some really cool clarinet solos written in it! If anyone knows anything that you've played or heard that you really liked please share.

The Typewriter by LeRoy Anderson is all about the first chair clarinet.

Xerxes by John Mackey (soprano sax solo, very modern concert march)

Undertow by John Mackey (4/4 -> 7/8 meters, percussion features, solos/solis)

Windsprints by Richard Saucedo (modern presto-type song)

Children's March by Percy Grainger (a classic and personal favorite)

Ride by Samuel Hazo (fast with a good alto sax solo)

Fantasy on a Japanese Folk Song by Samuel Hazo (interspersed solis)

Nitro by Frank Ticheli

Variations on a Theme of Robert Schumann by Robert Jager (lots of individual solos)

^^^^^Unfortunately none of those have significant clarinet solos. They are all definitely good and challenging pieces.

Suite Divertimento by Jay Gilbert has good, long clarinet solos.

Edit: Now that I relisten, I realize that my director rescored a soprano sax solo in the second movement for the first clarinet.

My symphonic band is playing Henry Mancini's Pie in the Face Polka, which comes from the 1965 movie: The Great Race. This piece is a lot of fun to play, but requires a really good clarinet soloist.

Aegean Festival is a pretty tough piece for the ensemble as a whole - if there are not strong sections rhythmically and otherwise it will be a challenge. There is an extended clarinet cadenza in the middle. There's several good recordings of this Andreas Makris piece.

Tap Roots, suite for concert band, from the movie.

This has a bunch of clarinet solos and is not too difficult -- intermediate high school level. It's from the 50s and may have sections with titles we now recognize as racist stereotypes.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Ticheli's Blue Shades.

I was just about to mention blue shades. Only problem is it's grade 6 and the poster wanted grade 3-5.

If you're looking for something light and fun, try Clarinet Candy by Leroy Anderson.
