I'm wondering if there are any good clarinets outside the so called big four?
I always hear Buffet, LeBlanc, Selmer, Yamaha. Are there any others worth looking at or buying? Thank you. Darby

I like the way some of the Lintons play.
The Thibouville Freres have some winners.
Some of the SML were nice, too.
You may want to stay with horns using nearly the same dimension as the modern clarinets, in order to be relatively in tune and tone.

Hey,
Patricola, AMATI, i know are good instruments. Haworth, Ripamonti, SML, and oris i hear are good instruments. Then you also have the custom ones such as Rosi, Peter Eaton, etc. If you are looking for a less expensive instrument Patricola, AMATI, I like. The other brands seem to have prices that are equal to or greater than the name brands. Try the instruments out first. IF you like it thats all that matters, not whats stamped on it. Some instruments arent even made by the company that is said to have crafted it.

IMHO no clarinet should be called "off-brand" with the possible exceptions of those 13/14 key abortions made in China and India which show up on eBay. You need to check out the Sneezy classifieds and Dave S's.....advert. He restores older lesser known instruments at a very fair price. He restored a wood Robert Malerne for me and refaced two mouthpieces (one a Selmer HS* and a Portnoy BPO2) I could not be more pleased. So eat your hearts out all you "R-13" lovers.

Speaking of those 13/14 key things from india...... what exactly are those clarinets? I have seen the pictures of them on eBay and they are very odd looking. Are they still Bb's? I did notice that the guy selling them has MAJOR bad feedback! That is always a good clue.

To Shelly..... Those 13/14 key clarinets from India are new copies of old albert system clarinets. They are also probably the worst quality horns I've ever seen. If you want a wall decoration or material for a custom lamp, this is where they excell.

personally.. i have a 25 y/o artley that suits me fine, i'm mainly an alto or bass player, but every so often i have to bring out the soprano and it seems just as capable as the plastic beginner jupiter or the wooden professional buffet (quite a variety in my band, eh?) i don't know much about how reputable artleys are, or if they're even still in production, but like i said.. it's my opinion. i bought it used when i was 8 for $150, and it's still getting used and in great shape. i think it's had 2 major tuneup/repairs in the 10 years or so i've had it

Artleys are still being manufactured and are one of the best student quality clarinets available. Very durable and good tone. I personally don't like the mechanisms, but their good for the learner, and that's who they're made for. Also, Artleys are "sisters" to the Armstrong brand clarinets as well. Both are in the same "league". They also have wood clarinets, but I would compare them more to a Buffet E-11 or any other intermediate clarinet.
