Can anyone suggest a new Selmer clarinet for me?
Author: justingaga

First, I have to apologize for my poor grammar because I'm from Taiwan, so I'm not sure if my grammar is correct, but I am sure that you can understand what I mean, thank you.
The clarinet I am using now is Buffet RC, and I am going to buy a new one.
I'm thinking about a more professional clarinet such as a Buffet Festival or Tosca or something like that, but since I went to an instrument exhibition, the Selmer Privilege had become another great choice for me.
I heard about many people who said that Selmer is a great brand to choose, but Buffet is a big company too, so I didn't know which one would be better to me. Can anyone tell me something about the Buffet clarinets and Selmer clarinets, so I can choose some to try them out. Or is there any model that you highly recommend, I would like to know that. If you have any other recommendations such as LeBlanc or Yamaha, please let me know.
I wish I can know more about those clarinets, so any other information will be appreciated, thank you!

I forgot to say, my budget is around 200,000 NTD which is around 6,700 USD or 4,880 EUR.
Thanks!

For $6700 you can get some really nice clarinets. Selmer Privilege, Buffet Tosca, Buffet Festival with MOBA Barrel and Bell, Leblanc Cadenza, Legacy, and Symphonie, Yamaha CSG, CSG II, and CSV. I suggest you try and play all of these and see what you like the most. At this price range you should try to look for a clarinet that is unstained grenadilla or cocobolo, has a low F correction key and has good tuning and tone throughout all registers. I personally like the Backun clarinets a lot so that would be my suggestion, but all the other companies make a very good clarinet

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Wind Ensemble
Buffet E11 clarinet , Vandoren Masters CL6 13 series mouthpiece w/ Pewter M/O Ligature, Vandoren V12 3.5
Yamaha 200ad clarinet, Vandoren B45 mouthpiece, Rovner ligature

Thank you. But I have never seen the brand you recommended, Backun, here in Taiwan. Where did you get that? In the U.S.? If so, can you tell me where you got it because I am going to the U.S. in two week. Thanks a lot.
Also, can you describe the difference between the sound of cocobolo and grenadilla? I know it may be a bit hard, because I just wanted to know (I have never tried a cocobolo instrument).

MOBA is the top model of Backun clarinet.

How you feel to your RC. Do you like it or not? Most of the Selmer will feel quiet different to Buffet. If you don't want to change too much of your setting, then a Chadash, Rossi(USA bore), Leblanc (concerto, opus), Peter eaton or a backun will be a better choise.

As you live at Taiwan, you have chance to try many instruments, like the Josef clarinet. It is better to talk with your teacher before you buy a experience clarinet.

I would perhaps amend our high school friend's advice and state that while good tuning (for a clarinet) and excellent response and tone quality are important, the low F correction key is hardly a necessity (and only available as a standard option on the Tosca and the newest CSG...the MoBa is over $8,000 and thus out of the OP's price range).

The Selmer Privilege is an absolutely extraordinary clarinet, and since it appears that you've already played one and liked it, it should be at the top of your list. By all means, try as many clarinets in your price range that are available to you as you can, but don't be swayed more by the opinions of others than by your own experience. If you try five clarinets and you clearly prefer one of them, then that is the clarinet you should buy.

The RC is a perfectly fine instrument in its own right, and very much a professional clarinet.

I also second the poster from Hong Kong who suggested you try a Josef...I have been fortunate enough to play several and they are magnificent. Since you're in Taiwan, it's a distinct possibility that they will be readily available to you.

Good luck, and I hope you find the perfect clarinet for you!

MoBA stands for Morales Backun, a collaboration between Morrie Backun, a Canadian tech and Ricardo Morales the principal clarinetist of the philadelphia orchestra. I believe that Backun ships to Taiwan and that they have some dealers in the country. Unfortunately a MOBA clarinet is out of your price range but Backun makes great artist series clarinets, one level under the MOBA, one level above the Protege. The other thing you could do is invest in a MOBA barrel and bell set and a new mouthpiece for your RC. That may change the sound of your clarinet in a way you like. It would also save you about $5000 USD. Why do you want to get a new clarinet? Is there something you don't like about your RC?

Thanks for all your advices, they are useful. In fact, I like my RC clarinet, but I feel that it isn't...good enough, but I know it is a high quality instrument though.
I'll go and try as much as I can, and I just want to know, is there anything I have to know? Like maybe some serial numbers from some specific brands shouldn't be chosen?

Have you ever tried to order the Backun clarinet online? Their clarinets seems to be quite good, but I often doubt about the quality of the products when online shopping. Can I return it if I don't like it? Or can you tell me how their online shop works? Thanks.
P.S. They didn't write the price on their website, do you know how much are they?

What exactly isn't good enough about your RC? Is it something tangible? Perhaps it needs adjustment by a tech?

Buy a more experience clarinet won't improve your playing. If I am you, I will use the money to join music summer camp, master class, find the best teacher, buy CD.... and more other things. You can even buy a digital recorder/home studio and record your practice.(It help me much at least few year and make your practice more fun). All these things will improve your playing more than any experience clarinet.

If you don't know what wrong to your RC, how come you can find a clarinet you like? Talk to your teacher about this before you buy any clarinet.

I know many people who own a Tosca but still perform with R13/RC.
