 Planning a recital
Author: Genevieve

Hey all! It's not for another two years, but I'm planning a recital for a performance degree and need some opinions on the lineup I have so far:

Open with Solo des Concours by Messager

Schumann Fantasiestucke

Brief intermission

Movements 1 and 3 of the Brahms quintet Op. 115 w/ string quartet for variety

After that I'm stuck...I only have an hour and including breakdowns after the Brahms, I have anywhere between 7 and 11 minutes. I'm looking for a piece with no movements that I can go out with a bang on, or maybe open the second half with something like Debussy first Arabesque and then end with something similar with the Brahms in between. Any suggestions?

If you go with Solo de Concours, here is a wonderful rendition I stumbled across a few years ago:

If you want an unaccompanied piece, the Kovacs: Hommage à Manuel de Falla is always a crowd favorite.

It's only about 3 1/2 minutes, which is about the right length for the audience to pay attention for just clarinet alone.

Perhaps something with piano and one of the quartet players:
Bruch Trio Pieces with viola
Glinka Trio Pathetique with cello
Milhaud Suite with violin

If you have string players on hand who are strong enough for Brahms, you might as well make use of them.

Just was prowling around on YouTube. Have any of you played the Milhaud Duoconcert or Monti' s Czardas?

A performance degree recital must have complete works. You simply may not play two movements of the Brahms Quintet. It's all or nothing. (Also, the heart of the Brahms is the second movement. Leaving it out is just not possible.)

Finally, a performance degree recital must include 20th century and 21st century works. Your program reads like one for a high school senior or conservatory freshman.

Talk to your clarinet prof.

Ok, after giving it some thought, I've scrapped all but the Schumann and instead have decided to replace Brahms with Milhaud Suite for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano and end with the Rosenblatt Carmen Fantasy or Rossini Intro. Theme and Variations...Possibly John Ireland Fantasy Sonata. Thinking of the Cahuzac Cantilene for the intro since it'short but still has a nice edge to it. WDYT?
