Hello,
I was wondering if anyone is going through what I am at the moment.
In Orchestra practice 2 weeks ago, just as I was playing to from Slavonic Dance No 1, My right wrist tensed and I couldn't loosen it; and then I heard a snap and have been in a fair amount of pain ever since, even with advil. I currently am trying a wrist brace, but it doesn't seem to be helping and I also have trouble writing. Anyone else going through this too? If so what, besides seeing a doctor, are you doing?

My wife's a Pediatrician. She , needless to say, fields injury calls daily.
"Elevate, ice, mortrin." I've heard it so many times it rings in my head.
Add to that a clarinet strap, a comfortable thumbrest, and a doctor's appointment.
There's a recent post on clarinet straps that covers thrumbrests as well.
Feel better.

The usual acronym is RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation).
Trying to play through the pain only makes the injury worse. Go ASAP to a Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist who specializes in wind players. The therapist will spot the source of cramping and pain in an instant and suggest changes (more often than not to the thumb rest position) to relieve the problem.

Ultimately, Ken may be right, but the reality is that if you want your insurance to pay for a physical therapist's services, you may have to go through your family doctor or Primary Care Physician. What is important is that you don't continue to try to self treat this. Bring it to the medical professionals who have seen these problems before and can prevent further injury by recommending an appropriate treatment.

I just came from Stephen Fox's website and thought of this post. Granted, some of the solutions help the right hand more than the left.

Hi, everyone.
Just wanted to say that I've been to my primary care. He can't seem to find anything wrong, so he tld me to contact a specialist. We did and have an appointment in July, after the fourth. My wrist is better, but it still hurts to play. I'll let you all know how it is when we go to the doctor.

Hi everyone,
My doctor's appointment went very well. The diagnosis was made and is tendinitis. They said to keep using the wris brace I received from the primary care. I also now have an occupational therapist to work with. Add to that anti-inflammatory medicine.
Since I've been experiencing numbness as well, an EMG, has anyone on this board ever had one? I'm not quite sure what it is, and since it sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, I find myself being very nervous.
All the best,

Yes, I've had a couple of EMGs to locate the actual point where the nerves in my arm were being "pinched."
I'm sure the specialist explained the procedure itself. It sounds much worse than it is. There is no real pain - just slight pinpricks - and it's finished fairly quickly. Nervousness about it is normal, but I don't think, once you've begun the procedure, you'll find there was anything to be nervous about.

Tendonitis means inflammation. Inflammation means internal swelling in a limited space. Swelling means that nerves in the area are probably being compressed and/or are inflamed themselves (which means they're swollen too).
Take your anti-inflammation meds, wear your brace, do the icing or heat or whatever was prescribed, don't play the clarinet, watch TV, and you'll be better soon.
Don't think you're going to beat the odds and play the clarinet anyway. That would be dumb.
