Bass clarinet part in Mahler 6: Two versions in Bärenreiter edition
Author: Joarkh

Hi all,

I will be playing the bass clarinet part in Mahler's 6th symphony with a student orchestra this summer, and the Bärenreiter edition which we are using is supplied with two versions of the part. On the first is marked: "For original version, see page 23", which is where you find the other one. I do not have the music in front of me and was only able to take a brief look at it earlier today, but they seemed largely identical.

Does anyone know why there are two versions supplied, and what kind of version the first is, if not the original? Apparently the bass clarinet part is the only one in the Bärenreiter set to have such a duplicate.

I've played Eb on Mahler 6 but not the bass part. I don't remember the bass player dealing with two parts. I would guess that the original is partly in A and hopefully for your sake, the newer one is transposed. Congrats on getting to play one of the best pieces ever written!

Rather than deal with the inevitable speculation you will find here, best to get in touch with the librarian.

Thanks, I am looking forward to it! Unfortunately, neither is transposed.

There is a transposed part linked to the IMSLP site:

Thanks, but I prefer to read the original version ;)

I've played it several times professionally, never saw or knew of more than the orignal part.

Received the music today, turns out the one copy was actually transposed to B flat for all of it... Well, mystery solved, at least.

You were right, sorry! My previous remark was from memory without the music in front of me.
