I just picked up one of these used, to use as a doubling instrument in for my pit work. Overall, I'm very pleased with the horn, build is great and keywork very nice. It does play very sharp though, and my question is does anyone know of other b.c. necks that would work on this horn to lower pitch?

I don't know if a Jupiter, Vito or Bundy bass crook will fit.
If it is too sharp, have you pulled the crook out at the top of the body with any success (then lock it in place)?
If it's still too sharp, have an adjustable sliding section fitted to it, but that will be expensive (but probably not as expensive as a new crook).

Yes, pulling out crook about 1/2" gets it in tune. I may look into some type of custom extension.

I have my Buffet Prestige bass tuning slide pulled out by around 5mm to bring the pitch down a bit (1/4" or thereabouts).

I felt the same about the last Yamaha series. They are great playing horns, but pretty sharp. I also found that if I pulled too far, air would leak where the 2 halves of the neck socket came together (where the screw is). I suppose it would be an option to also pull the mouthpiece a bit.

They are not sharp, but very well in tune. If you happen to play in an A=442 region, that is.
(I have to pull my Jupiter neck by ~3mm, same with my Bundy and my Emperior, to stay at A=442.)

I have one of these for my school program. A couple kids use it, all of them playing on a Fobes Debut mouthpiece. Pulling out the neck a bit gets the pitch centered, and for the most part the intonation is excellent. For the price it was an excellent purchase, the endpin works really well, and the carrying case is very compact.

I have a 221 horn too and I have been using it for 3 years, and it has seen service in acoustic bands, symphonic bands and orchestras, and it sounded pretty well. In fact it sounded even better than an older wooden Yamaha!
However I agree it is really sharp. I have to pull 5mm out of the neck, and also 2mm out of the mouthpiece to get to A440. Another problem(to me, but may not be applicable to others) is that the playing angle is too shallow(30 degrees), as I am used to at a steeper angle(45 degrees).
So I am considering to buy a new neck to address these problems.
