I keep a dead reed on the mouthpiece so I don't scratch the table. After I swab out my mouthpiece, I put the dead reed and ligature/cap on and into the case it goes.

I just slide the ligature gently on the mouthpiece until it stops. I then put both in a soft plastic cap, which I've used for 50 years. I've never scratched anything.
Anyway, the light sort of scratch you might make is not going to make any difference.

As the ligature is curved and the table is flat the ligature won't touch the table. I just put the ligature on the mouthpiece nipped up just enough to stop it moving and put a mouthpiece cover on. It then goes into a small velvet bag that my wife once bought some perfume in. Never marked anything yet.

I would say most of these ligatures are fine just placing them on the mouthpiece. The Rovner Eddie Daniels (Versa) has really sharp edges and this one requires some buffer or reed to prevent scratches. I have deeply scored a BG Revelation and use a piece of paper cut from card stock that I slip on with the ligature for storage.

I use a reed blank just to hold the ligature in place. I don't tighten the screws, but merely use it to keep the ligature from sliding around. It helps keep the ligature in shape if it is at all delicate.

Just came up with an ingenious idea: I took duct tape and rolled it into itself to make it non-adhesive, and then made a duct tape sleeve to fit snugly over the mouthpiece, and the ligature slides over that. Thinner than a reed, and won't warp the mouthpiece.

Tyler.....an easier solution is to cut the fingers from either latex or cotton gloves and slide them over the mouthpiece.......

Or play crystal mouthpieces, takes a concerted effort to scratch them. But fundamentally Tony F is correct; the curved interior of a metal ligature can only contact the flat mouthpiece table, at worst, along the very edges of the table -- simple geometry.
