I've been looking into getting a better clarinet ( I currently play a 35 year old Vito Resotone that was handed down to me from my mother.) While I love my Vito to death, I've improved enough to the point that I need a better instrument for the concert/orchestral season.
I live in California and am wondering if there is any place here that sells many clarinets, and that I could go to to try out various clarinets over the summer? I already have a couple in mind, but I want to keep my mind open and try out as many as I can.
I'm pretty much in love with the Backun Protege (it plays wonderfully), but are there any clarinets that you guys would recommend for me to try out ( budget is under 3000$). I will be playing in a youth orchestra next year, and also play in my schools concert/ marching band. I plan on continuing with music for a long time!
Sorry if this was long, and props to you if you read this far xD Thanks!

RDG Woodwinds, Inc, at 289 Larchmont Blvd, 2nd floor, in Los Angeles is very good for trying new and used Buffets. They also stock Patricola and the Selmer Eb and Bass Clarinets. You can find used mouthpieces there for considerably reduced prices (for example some Mo-Bas for 40 to 50 % off), as well as barrels, reeds, etc.
If you're looking for new Selmer soprano Bb and A clarinets or Yamahas, you probably will not find them there.
Tom Ridenour's Lyrique Libertas is also a fine clarinet for just around $1500. As far as I know, they are available only directly from him.

Ingram and Brauns Musik Shop.......Modesto, CA. Fairly close to you I think.
From what I know they carry a very wide range of brands and models.
Disclaimer: While they don't stock Lyrique clarinets they have ordered them in the past upon request. If saying that's against any board rules.....I apologize. Regardless of if your interested in a Lyrique clarinet I&B's would be a good place to at least look into.

I suggest you go to the web pages of Buffett, Selmer, Yamaha, etc., click on the Dealer option, put in your zip, etc. E.g., http://usa.yamaha.com/dealers/ Then call the dealers and ask what they have in stock that you can try out. Or simply Google: Music Instruments San Jose or similar (depending on how far you're willing to drive.)
Another option are the online dealers who will send instruments on approval, e.g., http://wwbw.com , http://shopweinermusic.com, or the dealers who advertise on this bulletin board.
Best Music in Oakland is going out of business June 30 - they might have something that will work for you at a very good price http://www.bestmusicco.com.
A few blocks away is A&G Music http://www.agmusic.com which has a reasonable selection.
But before picking up your car keys, call.

Ingram and Brauns Musik Shop is my go to place. However, they now have their inventory spread over more than one shop. I believe one of them is west of The Altimont Pass which would put it closer to you. They are very cooperative and, if you give them a call in advance, will gather anything they have that might be of interest to you and have it all in one place for you to try.
It has been a long time since I was there, but Forrest Music in Berkeley used to be very good. For what it's worth, I have recently heard rumors that they may be changing their emphasis. Give them a call, first.
