I've found another interest other than music.. and its causing me a great deal of pain... Every one of my friends and relatives thinks its absolutely hilarious, but i've taken up golf. The bag is about bigger than I am. I'm ok at it, I'm floating between varisty and JV for my schools girls golf team (playing JV occurs when i shoot an 8 on the first hole like i did yesterday....). As much as I love it, its seriously hurting me.. my right wrist hurts like no other. I havent played Bb since it started hurting, b/c its going to kill when i do. My back isnt great from golf either (i think it has something to do w/ the car accident i was in on sunday..) but I'll survive. I know its a long shot (no pun intended), but has anybody gone through this before? I've found that the Ace bandage is my very good friend now.... it helps a little, but it still hurts... anybody gone through this?

I've golfed, been in a couple of auto accidents, been through surgery, spent three years in the US Marine Corp, raised three children, have seven *grand* children, (not necessarily in that order) and now trying to learn music and the clarinet......................anyone think I'll survive..................probably will if I live long enough.

Golf is very much like the clarinet.................you'll never be any good without an instructor right from the beginning ...................you'll only pick up bad habits on your own. You might do a search for "golf" - there is bound to be a forum/BB for same.

Me. I have plans to get a Leblanc Concerto and team up with Eddie Daniels................if I could only get this darn counting down............hut, one two, three.........I mean, one, two and, three and, four.

Ashley, we've all been through *it* (whatever it is), or will if we live long enough. So, set your priorities & goals, keep the blinders on, concentrate a forge ahead. The key element here is priority............what do want?

Concentration! Good luck.

Actually you can combine your golf and clarineting for more fun. Keep an old metal clarinet in your golf bag (they can fit nicely in one of those plastic tubes with the clubs) and when someone in your group is taking to long lining up a putt, or drawing back for that big drive off the tee, yank it out and start playing Pop goes the Weasel or something. After all, they have to get used to gallery distractions anyway if they decide to go pro.

Hey with that metal clarinet in the bag I bet you won't need a wedge. If you carry a wooden horn also you might not need any wooden head clubs.

At least if you become a proficient golfer, you won't have to play the Cowbell at weddings to pay the bills!

Is Nike offering endorsements to clarinet players?

Just remember that this is the hardest game, ever devised by man, to waste time at great expense, whilst ruining a perfectly good walk.

If your hand hurts, the club is prolly slipping and you have a 'Death grip' to maintain some control. A good glove (maybe some lessons?) will help.

Any kind of exercise, even chasing the little dimpled spawn of a sea-goat, is beneficial.

I admire the tenacity and determination of you golfers, it's your sanity I question.

Ashley:

Anji has a very good point. The golf stroke is actually so smooth and easy when done right. I would suggest that besides the grip, you may be trying to hurry your swing. You may be trying for full head speed in the first few inches of your swing. Relax, let your swing build from the top of your backswing.

Enjoy yourself. Yes, golf is the most frustrating game in the world but also one of the most enjoyable - almost as enjoyable as music.

MOO (My Opinion Only!)

I'm no golfer, but I have a suggestion. You may wish to start playing your Bb with the bell held between your knees. That is how most double lip players play the clarinet. It will take the weight of the clarinet off of your right wrist, so it should help some.

Ashley--

"Death is nature's way of telling you to slow down," is a joke.

Pain is no joke and IS nature's way of telling you that something is wrong. Ignoring it and playing through it is the old (usually macho) way of dealing with it and has ruined many an athlete and musician in the long run. A newer, better way is to find out what is causing the pain and find a way to alleviate it.

Neither golfing nor clarineting should be painful--uncomfortable, perhaps, as you learn a new skill and use muscles in a new way--but not painful. If you are experiencing anything more than sore muscles, either 1) your anatomy is not suited to the sport or the instrument (unusual, I would guess), 2) you are playing (the sport or the instrument) incorrectly in some way, or 3) you are overdoing your practicing/playing (not unusual if you are really excited about it).

If golf hurts your wrist, find out why. If your team coach is competent, ask him or her. Or take at least one lesson with a golf pro. Or read a basic instruction book; most libraries have at least a few, bookstores will have even more.

Golf is not the most back-friendly game (and I'm sure the car accident did NOT help). As you know, working on your stomach muscles can help with back problems. Some high schools have fitness rooms now (mostly, I think, for the football players, but you should be able to arrange to use it, too), and perhaps a qualified fitness instructor who can work out a "golf fitness" program for you.

Do you carry your golf bag? If so, that may be another source of your wrist and back pain. Wheeled pull carts are at least a little better than toting the sticks on your shoulder. Also, have a pro check your equipment to be sure it fits you.

Hope this is at least somewhat helpful.

Thanks,

Todd W.

I have been through that hole wrist pain thing, I let it go for 3 years and ended up having surgery. Do NOT let it go. Lt your coach know and your doctor. I now rest my clarinet on my knee or use a clarinet neck strap. You might want to try one of these.

Please do not let the pain win, get it taken care of!!!!!
