 2014 ClarinetFest - should I go?
Author: nsea

Hello,

I am a graduating senior from high school and I will be majoring in clarinet performance in the fall. I am thinking about going to this year's ClarinetFest in Baton Rouge, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it for someone at my level; I have not been to any of them in years past, and the website does not currently have any information about specific events that will be going on during the festival. Do you think that it would be worth the costs of lodging/transportation? Thanks.

Sure it would. It's great for anyone at any level of any age. You can observe master classes and attend a great number of fantastic concerts. Also you can participate and walk around the exhibits.

Had the fortune of going in 2010 and 2012, and I have the fortune to attend again this year.

It's a great environment, plenty of other people to talk to and bounce ideas off of. The masterclasses are top-notch and you'll frequently see all types of players. They'll have masterclass students ranging from beginner, to intermediate, to damned near pro. And the tips they give to all of them can be applied many times in your own personal practice routines.

Add to that a huge exhibit hall with the latest and greatest, and and excellent concerts and performances of all styles of music.

Well worth it. I'd take a look at the schedule and performances, pick a few KEY ones you don't want to miss, and hope they don't overlap!

Funny thing is I'm walking around all these folks, and not realizing who they are even though I have some CD's of them back home!!!

Quick story on the environment at clarinetfest -

My friend and I attended in 2010. We both had our key performances we wanted to watch and kept meeting up for the ones that were mutual. We were both looking at the schedule and talking about how in about a half hour we need to get some seats for Larry Combs' masterclass. Some guy behind us leans in as we're talking and says, "You don't wanna hear that guy. Sounds like $H!*. Doesn't know what he's talking about."

We turn around to see a grinning and chuckling Larry Combs lean away from us and start walking to the auditorium as we laugh and follow him to his masterclass.
