I use one of these with my Selmer C85-120 mouthpiece and it is a beautiful combination. I bought it over 20 years ago and it still does the job. It has been superseded a couple of times but I have had no reason to change. I have never had a reed move or slip with this ligature.
I recall being told that the "R" means it was made to fit on a hard rubber mouthpiece. Not sure what the "E" and the "1" signify though.
It is actually nearer in design to the Rovner Dark in my opinion.

Sorry I don't know the answer to that. Rovner have been around sonce the mid-1970s so it's likely that there were earlier models.

Through the magic of Dropbox I checked my inventory (I'm at home in my easy chair right now). I sell a Rovner 1E for Eb clarinet mouthpieces. Perhaps the E-1R is an earlier designation.
The "1" would signify the size. The R would signify Rubber. I just tell my customers to use whichever one fits their mouthpiece

I have this ligature for alto saxophone, designated E-1RL. The E stands for EVO-5, a ligature that has been discontinued, but not that long ago. Its construction is similar to the Star Series ligature currently available, except that, unlike the Star Series, it has cut-outs on each side. This allows one to position two straps over the reed, if desired, with the screw and pins off to the side of the mouthpiece, in addition to the normal positions of pins on the reed or opposite the reed.

Yes, that's a picture of the EVO-5.

I've never seen this model. Rovner seems to have tried every combination of holes imaginable. The Rovner I like best is a light weight strap with the usual tightening mechanism and a large centered hole which leaves two narrow strips that hold the reed down.
It has the most resonance of any of my ligatures; better than Optimum, Luyben, other Rovners (some with metal inserts), Harrisons, screws-on-top Bonade, two-screw metal ones - the light Rovner is the one I use daily. I barely tighten it.

A couple of photos of my old faithful Rovner. This is a very different ligature to the OP's. Perhaps I am mistaken re the model, but I have been calling this "my E-1R" since I bought it.

Paul: I just recently modified one like that. I cut a section out the "width" of the hole and length extending both sides of the hole towards the "rods". I then cut away the inner "support band" on both sides and glued the ends down to the outer band area. It is now, essentially, a Rovner Light and works just fine. Cutting this stuff was not easy as it is very tough.

Bob, I admire anyone who would have the courage to slice away at their ligature in order to improve it! But I would never have the guts to attempt that. Besides, I'm very happy with it as is. Thanks.
