OK, my E13 fell and a large crack from the tenon to the highest trill key developed. I took it to a repairer and he has ordered a new joint. So, will the new joint make the clarinet feel like a different one? What if the tuning is bad, do I have the option to say ''I dont like this, could i try a few to see which one is best'?! Its about £90 to take all the keys off and he is going to have to put all new pads because the tone holes will be differently placed. Also, will I have to treat it like a new clarinet, e.g. blowing it in and all that jazz (please dont go off on a tangent and discuss this) ?

1). There is a likelihood that a new top joint will play a little different from the one you originally had. It may play a little better, or a little worse, or just a little different.
2). You should treat a new top joint just as you would a new instrument because from a wood vulnerability point that top joint is a new instrument.
3). I would imagine that having ordered a new top joint you would be unlikely tohave the option of changing it -how many new joints would you expect a repairer to buy in?
Finally I take it that the old top joint has cracked all the way through into the bore. If not then a carbon fibre band repair may be a better option than a new joint and it would be unlikely that any playing characteristics tuning/tone etc would change at all.

to add to what Norman says, if you end up replacing joint make sure you get and old one back, as it may be saved still.
IMHO in many cases the top joint can be pinned and/or glued, but it is hard to say w/o pictures. Even if tenon is chipped and parts are missing they can be built with grenadilla dust and superglue.
If you can get a second opinion; it is possible that something else influences his you tech. Perhaps he is not comfortable with repairs? Perhaps it could be less work/more money to re-pad and swap keys then fix the crack.

To be honest I was rather relieved when he told me that a new top joint would be necessary. The tuning wasnt all that great as the bore has expanded. The clarinet fell onto the top tenon so the wood chipped and cracked right at the tenon and a crack occurred down to the top trill key. He said it would cost the same to get a new joint as it would to repair it so I opted for the new joint. I have full confidence in this repairer and doubt he would try and get more work by exaggerating the problem. I will try and get the old joint back as it could always be sold for spare parts :P

I recently had the top joint replaced on my Greenline R13. My top tenon had broken off as a result of a fall. I was prepared to be disappointed in the repair, as I had understood that joints are really made to go together, but I'll have to say that it sounds and feels wonderful. Of course, it could be due to the stability of the Greenline material or due to the attention to detail of my repair artisan who had to do the key transfer and changeout all the pads and adjust and such, but either way, I've been really happy.
It also took a long time to shake the joint out of the Buffet folks. We're talking about 4 months to get a new joint. I'm not sure why the long time, but one thing I did notice is that the new joint has no serial # marked on it, though it does have all the other Buffet branding.

I've been told about 4 weeks to get the new joint delivered. I reckon because yours was a greenline that it would take longer. Even to try one out at Howarth, they have to order it in specially. I hope it is an improvement.
