Any recommendations for a solo piece for a memorial mass. I had chosen Un Seul by Opperman but the music director said it was not appropriate. I am not understanding why.
thanks.

I think you should find out why the music director considers the Opperman piece inappropriate to save yourself from proposing other inappropriate works. It may be that the church does not have BMI and ASCAP licenses and he is concerned about the possibility of having to pay a performance fee for a work that is not in the public domain. Most likely, I suspect, he may be objecting on the grounds that the work is secular music rather than sacred music. (I've run into this issue before.) Then there is also the outside possibility that he is mistranslating/misunderstanding the title. Or it could be something else entirely.
Best regards,
jnk

Try this one. Classic melody (Picardy) that will fit perfectly for a Catholic memorial service.

A safe choice would be Bach's Arioso from Cantata BWV 156. I've performed this on organ many a time at Roman Catholic churches, and have always thought it would be wonderful to accompany a solo clarinet, oboe, or cor on this piece.

Ursa: Do you know if there is a solo clarinet arrangement of the Bach? Or do you know of another solo instrument version that would transpose nicely?

There is a version for bass clarinet and piano on www.music-scores.com. They published it at my request (I am a member). It is also suitable for soprano clarinet.
