The term harmony clarinet is used as a general definiton for clarinets pitched below a Bb or A soprano clarinet, such as alto, bass, contra-alto and contra-bass clarinets. ~Cathy

Because they're usually used in a clarinet choir (or other ensemble) to play the harmony parts below the melody-playing sopranos???

Depending on the maker, "harmony" can mean "anything lower than an A clarinet" or "anything that's not a Bb or A clarinet" including higher pitched instruments such as an Eb.
