I recently acquired a bunch of those old small Band Books.
I got them on eBay quite cheaply
The Books are Collections of Tunes from the Mid Century that I guess were suitable for High School Bands and College Pep Bands.
The Cover Art on these Books is very retro.... but I digress
All of these Books have written on the cover page 1st B Flat Cornet.
My Question..... are these Books likely Melody as opposed to Harmony, and would they be fine and fun to play using the Clarinet?
I would be playing them alone .
I am an Adult Beginner and its probably going to be a few months yet before I can play all of the notes out of these books!

While a somewhat loose analogy might be that the violin's parts are to the Orchestra's carrying of the melody as the clarinet's are to the Band, often, much of the tune is covered by the Trumpet/Cornet as well.
![[wink]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie3.gif) I must warn you though, just yesterday in the ER, two patients presented, both with serious injuries, but one more than the other.
The first attempted to play the cornet part on clarinet while the rest of the band played their parts. The second, far more seriously injured attempted to do this alone.
Joking aside, I am still friendly with teachers that went to High School with Stanley Drucker, the legendary principal Clarinetist of the NY Philharmonic, at the LaGuardia school of the arts in New York City. I recall one telling me that Mr. Drucker would play anything he could get his hands on to improve his play. The clarinet's range is so vast, this is often doable whereas the converse is not.

Ben, I think you're talking about the small-size folios of music--usually these are full of marches, polkas, or pep-band arrangements of popular and big-band music.
These would be fine to work out of. You will probably have to keep a trumpet/cornet part next to your clarinet part to keep ahold of the melody.
Many community bands are in need of this type of literature. You might want to check with your local ensembles to see if you have any folios that could be used to replace missing ones in their music library. And if you have a complete or nearly complete set of parts that you could donate, that would be even better!

I lived in Massapequa when growing up and Stanley Drucker lived around the block. I played Drums in a garage band and our paths never crossed...
probably should have invited him over to jam with us

...and, working out of trumpet/cornet books will really help you with crossing the break. The range used in the trumpet folios will run from around low C to G or A on top of the staff--there's going to be lots of throat tones and low clarion notes to be found in these parts.

I think you'll find that more often than not you've got recognizable melody but fairly often you won't. If you jump around a bit you'll have lots to play.
