 Brahms Quintet parts
Author: David Niethamer

Hello all - Please pardon the cross posting to KLARINET.

I will be playing the Brahms Quintet this coming summer, and want to replace my old, beat-up International parts that I've had forever. What are the "good" editions these days? Is Henle worth the $63 (plus $32 for the score)? Simrock (the original) is on IMSLP - will this work acceptable? Inquiring minds want to know.

thanks,

David

Despite the minor controversy that surrounds the Henle edition with respect to some of the markings, I like the edition because the page turns are excellent. The little study score is clean and very easy to read, but doesn't stay open on it's own. I cut the binding off of mine and had it spiral bound.

Speaking as a quartet player as well, it's a lot easier to navigate the violin and viola parts because of those nice three-page fold outs. Over the years having performed it with many of my clarinet students, I've found that we've changed the bowings in the parts dramatically from what is printed.
