Anyone using this new Thumbrest?
If so what do you think?

Yeah, I installed it on one of my horns where the thumbrest and ergonomics weren't working for me.

On the Plus Side: The Etude 3 works well. The instrument is secure in your hand (with the thumbrest sort of wrapping around your thumb, which I like), really does shift the weight of the instrument, and reduces stress in the hand. The metal pieces make it much more solid and durable than previous models. You can also slide the thumbrest off of the mounting plate so that your instrument fits back in its case.

On the Minus Side: I had to have my tech screw two holes in my instrument to attach the mounting plate. Then, before you use your horn, you attach and adjust the thumbrest onto the mounting plate. This works well as long as the weight is always downward on the thumb...if it reverses (i.e., the instrument pushes upward), you'll change your thumbrest adjustment, and may need to redo it (I've had this happen several times, and you end up reattaching tio the mouting plate with several loud clicks as you adjust).

Bottom line: I really like the thumbrest when it's in place, and it really delivers what I need in terms of reduced stress on the thumb. But, the "readjustment" problem mentioned happens frequently enough to keep me from fully recommending the item.

Hope this helps. Maybe others have solved the problems I'm having?

I don't understand your reference to having your tech drill holes in your instrument to mount the Etude 3. Perhaps your original rest used a non-standard mounting arrangement. The Etude rests use the existing holes from the original rest. I've swapped mine between various instruments several times and I've never yet had to drill a hole.

TonyF: That's possible….I currently use the Etude 3 on an alto clarinet, which is probably not standard compared to a Bb soprano clarinet. Bottom line -- holes were drilled.

Have you had issues with needing to readjust the thumb rest? I would love the Etude 3 if I could solve that!

I have used the Etude 3 for about 6 months now and have never experienced the readjustment problem you mentioned. I wonder if the plate might be on upside down. There is absolutely no way my thumb rest part can slide up the plate. I love mine. It's solved a severe issue that I was having with my right thumb.

Roxann may have put her finger (or perhaps her thumb!) on the problem. I've never experienced this problem, once in place mine stay there.

It's not on upside down. It works great as long as the weight of the instrument stays on the thumb.
