What is best to pull out the barrel or
Author: Staffan

Hallo

As my mouthpiece is too short, what is best to pull out(from the clarinet) the barrel or the mouthpiece....or both?

I can think that my mouthpiece is about 6-7 mm too short and should I make two "inserts" like spacers, so it will not be inner spaces?

I have a Eb mouthpice to an old(from 1860) c-clarinet with the bore 13 mm and the mouthpiece bore is 14 mm so I use a "rod" (diameter 7 mm) inside...

Best regards

It really has to be the barrel. You may be able to get a longer barrel either from the maker or that auction site. A lot of techs may also have some which would fit.

Hallo
Thank You for answer.
As it will be a space anyway inside, between the mouthpice and the barrel, I have made a wooden spacer for that joint. The barrel has a too deep joint than
the joint of the mouthpice so if I anyway should have a spacer...?

Thanks

6-7mm is quite a large amount to pull out on single joint (will leave mouthpiece very unstable). I would split it between the m/p-barrel and barrel-top joint sections.
Definitely do not want gaps this size at either point so spacers essential.

Hallo.

Yes, thank you...
I was thinking of, that the bore (tube) of the mouthpiece should continue
in the whole clarinet, or at least down in the barrel...

I am wondering how they made mouthpieces for this kind of clarinets, with such a narrow bore (barrel 12,8 mm and clarinet 13 mm)

So I donĀ“t know how long the mouthpice should/could be, but I think the bore should be 12,8-13 mm.....like the clarinet...with a rod inside mouthpiece.

One will likely have the opposite problem using a Vandoren M30D mouthpiece on a Boehm (French) system clarinet.

The "D" in the model number, which stands for Deutche, (i.e. German), finds the mouthpiece every so slightly longer than the accepting French standard barrel tenon.

While designed for use on either French of German clarinets, it's my understanding that this longer length is what one finds on the mouthpiece accepting barrel tenon of German clarinets.

As the mouthpiece plays in tune on my (French) R13, I've not sought to seek out either: a barrel that accepts a German mouthpiece that provides a French connection (no pun intended) to the clarinet's upper joint, or a standard M30 (sans the "D") mouthpiece.

Hallo again.

Yes, I have the oposit problem, my Eb mouthpiece is too short, as it is a Eb one. I should have had a C-mouthpiece I think. But as the Eb mouthpiece is smaller outside it fit the joint in the barrel...lyckiely...

Here is a "link":

http://www.vernissage.nu/wood_brass_bell.jpg

to my repairing, I am not a real craftsman...thou...but I think the brass bell looks nice. I made brassrings from an old watersmokingpipe(turkish) and brass bell from a sportsprice silverplated and a woodbell of a peppermill and the "buttonhole" from hardrubber from my cars suspensions spacer

I have a Lelandais and a S.M.L. mouthpice for my Couesnon Bb clarinet and they are 1,5 cm longer

The old clarinet has no name ...maybe from Vienna 1860-80...
The mouthpiece is from China and is working(?) is 6,35 cm without corkjoint and with Corkjoint is 7,7 cm.

On the Picture one can see that I have pulled out 0,7 cm...

What is the bore of a metall clarinet? This old is 12,8-13 mm

Thank You for answers...

Hallo again.

Now I am trying to make a "bore" in the mouthpiece(bore 14 mm) smaller with a rod inside.

But does anyone know:
if a larger bore, in the mouthpiece, will make a lower pitch for the "overblowing"(open thumbhole) tones?

or if a lager bore in the mouthpiece will make a higher pitch (tone)?

I wish to find the right intonation when I play low tones and tones with "overblowing"(thumbhole open)

(Now with a 7 mm(diameter) rod, it is too high ...!!!wrong!!)
Now I notice that it is much better and I made a new rod 7 mm diameter
And it is working. I am surpriced that the old clarinet should have had a so slim mouthpiece-bore as this....

So far I have not seen(on Internet) any mouthpieces with bore 12,8-13 mm.
