 Buffet B12 or Yamaha YCL-250?

If you had to pick a clarinet out of only two instruments - a Buffet B12 or Yamaha YCL-250, which one would you choose and why?

I am assuming you are a new player.

I'd try them both ... but you may find a better deal with the offerings of Ridenour Clarinet Products ...

I owned a YCL200 which, I think is designed for the rental business ... made in Indonesia ... It played well and had a good sound, but it was so sharp that I couldn't use it, except in cold situations. Outdoors in the summer, the pitch soared .... I think the YCL200 is similar acoustically to the YCL-250 and 255.

I played a B12 for a few minutes, years ago ... not bad.

Also, the Backun Alpha might be good ... not played one.

Check our Ridenour's clarinets ... may be less expensive than the other "big name" student instruments and also play much better.

If you have a good teacher or can find a professional player that is relatively unbiased, see if you can have several instruments at the same time and let the expert help with the decision. Don't let the name brand influence your decision, it's how well the clarinet works for you.

Best of luck to you.

Tom

Sorry ...

I didn't answer your question ...

I've probably go with the Yamaha.

I'm not a new player, just curious as to which is the best plastic clarinet out of the two to recommend a prospective beginner.

The Buffet B-12 has bladder pads that don't last long (the B10 has synthetic). The Yamaha has synthetic pads throughout that are put in without glue, sometimes they seal well - sometimes they are problematic. I go back and forth on the build quality. Yamaha probably has an edge. I'd say it's a draw.

At this student level where specifics of tone quality is not a majot issue I would definitely take the Yamaha, it's much better built than the current B12.

Go with the Yamaha; buy a 67 MM Muncy barrel and you're good to go!
