 I'm back
Author: redwine

Hello friends,

I've been working on a doctorate degree for the last 4.5 years, so some things had to be put on the back burner, and, unfortunately, this forum was one of those things. I finished in December, so I have more time to participate here! I'll retire from the US Naval Academy Band this upcoming December, so then I'll really have time to bug everyone! Cheers.

Welcome back. We've missed you.

Are you still associated with Genussa mouthpieces or the World Clarinet Alliance?

Ask your doctor if you have a legato lasting longer than.........

Congrats. Now I know why you were looking at that BMW.

Welcome back Ben. By the looks of your enterprises and achievements I think you should be giving motivational speeches to clarinetists. I'm in the group that sit by the phone waiting for a gig to come in. What was the subject of your doctoral thesis?

As a long time freelance engineer and photographer, may I add "...or sit by the mailbox waiting for a check from client to arrive, or watch email waiting for notification of a long delayed direct deposit."

Of course, I'm sure if I reach my goal of also getting a few $ via clarinet, I'll always get immediate payment. Right?

I had the honor and the pleasure to meet you and your wife at the ClarinetFest in Assisi when we were neighbours in the incredible heat of the basement where we had our respective stands. Yes, what was your thesis on? Something clarinet-related? Good luck with your new career, or should I say: careers-playing, scholarly work and clarinet products.

Ben, do you like hard rubber clarinets?

Hi Ben,
It has been a hard haul and I congratulate you. As someone said, you have had a full time job with USNA, play numerous gigs around the DC area, and have put in the sweat and brain training to become a DMA. You are a lesson to all of us who think that our life is hectic but your motivation comes from the love of music and playing.

Hello friends,

Thanks so much for all of your well wishes! To answer all the questions at once:

1) I do still make the Gennusa mouthpieces, as well as Ben Armato's products (the Reed Wizard and PerfectaReed tools, and publish his books "The Opera Clarinetist," and "PerfectaReed...and Beyond").

2) I really don't have anything to do with the WKA, except that my friend, Mike Getzin, has me listed as a "VIP" and a moderator on his facebook page. His website and facebook pages are invaluable--check them out, if you haven't!

3) I haven't tried a rubber clarinet in over 10 years, but when I did, I loved the sound, but the intonation was unacceptable. Maybe advances have been made since then!

4) I don't know about "motivational speaker," but I am giving a lecture/concert at the ICA this summer in Baton Rouge. The topic is "Put All of Your Eggs in One Basket," or "How to Make a Living in the Increasingly Difficult Music Business." I hope to catch up with everyone there!

5) Hi Ruben!

6) My "document" for my doctorate degree actually did not have a clarinet topic. I earned a minor in Latin American Music History, and one of the requirements for that minor was to make your final project (a lecture/recital, accompanied by the document) be a Latin American Music theme. So, I studied the history of the samba, its development into the bossa nova, and with a special study of the famous 1962 "Jazz Samba" album, featuring Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Keter Betts, Joe (Gene) Byrd, Buddy Deppenschmidt, and Bill Reichenbach. I actually recreated that album in the final recital and subsequently recorded a tribute album which should be released very soon!

Cheers!

Hi Ben,
Do you know the flautist Odette Ernest-Diaz? She is a French musician who settled in Brazil in 1952 and has been there ever since. She has done much research on Brazilian music and music from other parts of Latin-America. There's a wealth of material there. I would say Brazil is the Latin-American country that used the clarinet most. In Cuba, it was more the flute; in Mexico, more the trumpet, etc.

Dear Sax Panther,
I didn't know Colombia used the clarinet so much. I'll get on to that. I know you have a great variety of music, just as you have a great variety of landscapes. Is there any good Colombian chamber music involving clarinet?

Hi Ruben

I'm actually English, but I play in a Colombian band based in the south of England. Don't know much about Colombian chamber music, we play traditional types of Colombian dance music. We're a 10 piece band at full strength. I'd say I'm about half on clarinet , and half on sax.
