Does anyone have any idea where I might find an old style clarinet case--vintage french style (pochette?) for a Bb clarinet. I would prefer no brand name. It is for a 30's clarinet.

Pouchette cases are still made. Contact your local music dealer and see if they can order you a Badger State case (Elkhorn, WI....sorry wholesale only). I believe their Buffet style pouchette (item B-41) retails for $102. It will not have a "brand name" on it. It is a nice case.

I have the utmost respect for Mr. Butler's knowledge (he restored an instrument for me and performed what I can only describe as a miracle) but I feel the need to suggest a less expensive alternative. Try - believe it or not- Flutes.Com. here is the address of a page that offers a pochette style case for $49.95 plus shipping.

This is the same case (minus the permanent zippered case cover and with different latches) that Selmer Paris provides with their professional model clarinets. I looked for a supplier for no-name pochette style cases like this for a couple of years before I found this. What I don't understand is why most of the large web and mail order suppliers don't offer them. The one caveat I can offer is that this case is very short on storage space (just ask any owner of a late model Selmer) so if you're a gadget junkie, you may not like it.

If you get an older pochette case, it will probably require you to store the instrument with the bell on the lower joint, and maybe with the barrel on the upper joint. It's very important that you shake and blot all the water out of the sockets and pull both the bell and barrel as far out as possible when you put the instrument in the case. Leaving them all the way on and/or wet is a sure recipe for sticking and cracking. I have stayed with a bulkier case that has separate bell and barrel compartments just for that reason.

Rob, I went to the Flutesonline site but did not find a pochette case for $49..only the Protex at $58... I probably missed something, so please clarify if possible.

When I searched the site again I did not see it either, but I had saved the page from the site in my favorites and was able to bring it up again. It has no item number either. It is listed on the site only as "generic clarinet case". If you want to send me your email address I can try to send you a picture of it so you can see it. My email is RHODSON@prodigy.net.
