Hello all,
I'm curious on your input. I'm buying dilapidated mid-range clarinets, overhauling them, and selling them in a local music shop on commission. So far they've all had good condition cases. But, sometimes these clarinet cases are in rather old and deteriorated condition. Is there a brand/model for a single Bb instrument you'd suggest? I don't want to buy'd a case worth more than the instrument, but I don't want to new owner to be annoyed when a case breaks a month into ownership. The problem is most quality (how much can I tell online) cases seem to start at $50.
Is there any solution without destroying my small profit margin?

And occasionally you will find on eBay a clarinet so cheap as to be disposable, in a usable case and/or with mouthpiece or other stuff worth the price of admission. Or so I've been tempted a time or 2.

I've bought Chinese cases off eBay for clarinets that had cases that were past it. Look out for the compact Yamaha style ones - either vinyl covered wood or moulded plastic like the older YCL-26II cases. I think I paid somewhere around £10 for them.

You may be able to find a local music store that rents to schools who has some used ones. I have known of some who want the cases they rent to look new, so they toss any that still work fine, yet just have some minor cosmetic issues.
Otherwise, ebay often has used or cheap cases.

Buy a cheapo Chinese clarinet, bin the clarinet and keep the case.

Another avenue to consider depending on your personal taste and volume of sales:
1) By a halfway decent size case at http://www.containerstore.com/welcome.htm, or a similar store, that fits clarinet.
2) By floral foam (oasis) at http://www.michaels.com/
3) Temporary put pieces of clarinet in plastic bags and push them into the foam.
4) Remove plastic bags.
5) Cover foam with fabric
6) Glue into case.

I used the term oasis so our friends "across the pond," such as you Chris, might identify what I am referring to.
(I heard this term used before on the bboard--maybe from you???)
The stuff I am referring to, purchaseable at Michael's Arts and Crafts in the States, I don't think experiences the same degregation you report on oasis, sir.

I like the idea of broken clarinet's cases and cheap clarinet's cases.
Sadly I'm not sold on the foam idea. I think it'll eventually break down and come through the fabric, mucking up everything about the clarinet. Also, what happens the first time a student closes the case onto a incorrectly placed clarinet part? It must unalterably change the case indents, yes?

A great case for $9.99 brand new is this Airsoft gun pistol case.
2 Inch Eggcarton Foam Padding
- Hard Case ABS Polyester Shell
- Double Clamp Locks
- 12"L x 9"H x 3"D
Simply take out the eggcarton foam padding in the top and bottom and reverse them to the smooth side. Then trace your clarinet parts( mouthpiece, barrel, upper and loer joints, and bell) with a pencil then using an xacto knife cut a gully for each clarinet part being careful not to go to deep. Voila.

I could see that causing some consternation from anybody that recognized the type of case. We could take that all kind of directions that are probably not great content on this forum- TSA checkpoint, school, even going hunting with your clarinet by mistake.

Not a problem. I have a load of laboratory instruments that come in exactly those cases. In fact, a lab supply company might be a good source for them.
