So how many calories does Martin Frost burn during one of his more strenuous performances, dancing, wearing masks, playing multiphonics, sliding fingers for extended glisses, twirling the clarinet baton-style and other calisthenics, and breathing circularly for extended periods of time? Might even qualify for Cross-Fit certification.

I don't know about calories, but I certainly think the lung exercise is good for us old folks- young'uns too. When I picked up clarinet at 57 I found it quite a breath workout until I got used to it again.

Bum knees forced me to quit long-distance running years ago, and I've had to cut back on how far I can walk, too -- but at age 65 I still seem to shovel snow more energetically than most of my younger neighbors. I wouldn't be surprised if playing wind instruments contributes to a higher level of fitness than I'd expect.

Breath control in yoga is similar in some ways to some of the things done in clarinet playing. Developing diaphram strength and getting rid of shallow breathing is part of developing a healthy body. I am convinced that many of the muscles contacted in clarinet playing is good for toning facial musculature which makes one look younger if nothing else. I'm too much of a gentleman to say all of the many benefits of developing an articulate muscular tongue but one I will mention is that it improves diction.

According to the MyFitpal diet app, playing a woodwind instrument is good for 60 calories an hour which is less that the LiveStrong count, I suppose it depends on how many times the conductor stops the rehearsal, whether you are standing or sitting, and many other factors.
