The New York Philharmonic was scheduled to play Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto
on March 12,13,14 and 15th. I received an email yesterday stating, that it is going to be replaced with Nielsen's Helios Overture. I purchased tickets in August and was planning to travel 240 miles to see this concert, how disappointing. I wonder why the change.

Because the Helios Overture is far more friendlier on the ears.
Even his Flute Concerto is enjoyable to listen to.
But his Clarinet with that 'banal ' tune at the beginning and so forth.
Apparently even one of his fellow Clarinet playing countrymen commented
that his (Nielsen's) Clarinet Concerto was a Concerto 'against' the Clarinet !

(my own personal bias here) Maybe its because NYC has twice selected the wrong mayor.

If you REALLY want to hear it, you can catch the San Francisco Symphony play it in the first weekend of April with SFS principal Carey Bell.
That's really unfortunate that NY took it off the program. I would put money on it having nothing to do with the "banal" sound. It's an iconic piece in our repertoire and if I could choose between that or the Mozart I'd pick Nielsen every time.

Any sort of insinuation that Morales or Williamson couldn't hold up to what Stanley Drucker did is ludicrous.
A few years ago the principal flutist went to the LA Phil and eventually chose to come back to Chicago.

I know for a fact that Morales was hired and decided to turn down the job. I don't know why Williamson is leaving. It has nothing to do with Drucker, there are many great players today that in my opinion are equally as good. Perhaps in some ways even better. It's all a matter of personal taste. Drucker was a great player but there are others today.
