What reed has the best overall performance? Especially for tone. How good are Legeres for allaround capability? I play a Yamaha YAS-23 with a C* mouth piece. I have intermediate skill and play a variety of music.

I have a YAS-23 also and really like it. As to Legere reeds, I haven't tried one on alto yet but got one for tenor and bass clarinet about a month ago for a pit orchestra and really like them. In fact I liked the bass clarinet so much it was my reed of choice for a community band concert.
You play a variety of music, so I would think Legere would be good for some applications (marching/practice) but since your main concern is tone I would think a really fine cane reed is still your best bet. However, give the Legere a try, it should be a playable reed long after the ones you are now using are but memories.

The Legere reeds I tried for clarinet were satisfactory. Still prefer cane reeds (and my reed wizard =).
Play a 3.5 Legere for alto sax. It's almost the only reed I bother playing on. Sound is decent, flexibility is great. Perhaps it's their larger size that makes fussing with them it less of an issue, but I prefer them for saxophone. This is on a Selmer SA80 II with a C*. I play a variety of music on it ranging from straight ahead classical to swing/blues/etc...it works great.

I was one of Legere biggest fans. I play a couple of hours a day and use two of them. switching every now and then. Well after about six month they died. I'm really not sure how long they should last, but for the price I expected more.

I have a Legere 3.5 in my reed case with a half dozen Vandorens all the time the Legere is great,very nice tone, clean tongueing.and supremely reliable,probably the best 13 quid I've spent for a long time.

My son and I don't like Legere reeds, we gave the two we had away. If you have no time to fuss with reeds they're good. Mine were never up to the better cane reeds, they had a wolf tone here and there. Worth a try, we seem to be out numbered by their fans.

These Legere reeds have been really useful to have. Especially so since they don't need to stay moist. My experience has been to get them a half strength greater than I play with cane reeds, going only one-quarter strength more didn't work out for me. I even play them for performances, a two hour gig would have killed one, possibly two cane reeds; the Legere is still playing. LOL ,I do have my best cane reeds for a backup!....what an unexpected reversal!!
