Does anyone know anything about SU's School of Music or their clarinet teacher? I'm trying to decide between this and UNT. I like the idea of a smaller school but UNT has a great reputation. Any help?

Even as a novice (or non-musician) I've heard of UNT having a fine school of music. Could be because I live in the area, or maybe because I once had a friend who's brother taught music there (uuhm......35 years ago). Certainly none of this has anything to do with my knowledge of music or playing since I just started last year.
Bottom line: I know nothing but rumor, that UNT has a good music school. Southwestern, I know nothing about. However, my teacher teaches at TA&M at Commerce..........I don't attend there, rather Kevin moonlights through Brook Mays, teaching clarinet and sax.
I know none of this helped but good luck anyway.

UNT and Sothwestern are great schools. I am also looking at both those schools,. as well as many others, for graduate work. UNT has had a much longer repuataion as a great music school . however, you have to ask yourself, do you want to be part of a music program like UNT that has a very small(yes i'm being scarcastic) 1500 music majors, or part of a smaller program..like southwestern, i don't know the exact numbers.
UNt is a powerhouse of music and produces many wonderful musciains, however you are also more able to just become one of the crowd, where at a smaller colege, southwestern, not to say that they are small by any means.
I don't have instant access to my information about the colege right now, but the website is a good place to start, you can request info from the school and e-mail many of the professors i really suggest that..
anyway...that's all i know for now...I havent been of much great information, but it's something....

UNT has 2 very fine clarinet teachers and really has many outstanding students. Opportunities for performance with major musical groups is at the top of the list. IF you WORK while in attendance, I am certain that you will receive a fair amount of return intensity. IF you FLOAT, you will receive a similar bit of intensity from your instructor. I did 6 months research at UNT and I might say that competition is strong. If you are really serious about UNT, prepare now for your playing exams, and don't neglect those scales and chord patterns. Good luck to you and prepare, prepare, prepare!!!!!!!!!!!!

UNT has a fantastic reputation for its music dept. If you're smart enough to be a music major you're smart enough to negotiate the big campus. Think of it as a small town. My son is there. But, alas, he's a drummer.

My personal opinion about all schools and colleges (in almost every field) is that to a large degree you get out of it what you put into it. i.e., if you work you can get the same quality eduction at any school in the country. If you are willing to work and self-actualize

BTW - UNT has it's own not for profit jazz radio station: KNTU FM 88.1.............. You can also find the radio station on the internet if you go to
htp://kntu.fm
at this time (9:00 AM CDT) they are haveing a fund raiser for the station financing. There are other programs on the station i.e. talk shows, clasical guitar on Sunday mornings, etc. but most of the times it's jazz.

David Pino was the teacher at SWT in San Marcos. He's a fine teacher. However, are you asking about SWT or Southwestern in Georgetown? Southwestern might now even have a music program. North Texas (in Denton) is a big school, mostly known for its outstanding jazz program. It's very large. If you went to San Marcos and studied with Pino, you'd probably get more individual attention. UNT would be better if you prefer a more competitive environment.
