 Conn 424N/424N
Author: Jack Swickard

What is the difference between a Conn 424N and 444N? I have heard that the 444N is a good jazz horn buth does that apply to the 424N?
Thanks,
Jack

I have played both and the 424N appoints itself well. The key work and wood selection on my 444Ns tend to be nicer.

I have one in playing condition that really swings with an open tip Glass mouthpiece... I already have Pete Fountain's hair style, so at least I look the part (even if I couldn't play my way out of a wet paper sack).

Drop me a line off post, and I can give more detail.

The differences are very subtle. The 444Nhas a small gold colored medallion set into the bell, the 424N does not. The 444N had the bridge key protection feature which does not appear on the 424N. There may be other differences that I am not aware of, but acoustically the instruments are virtually the same.

I have a 424 that DOES have the bridge key connection feature. Both have tone hole inserts (chimneys). I measure the bore of a 444 I'm currently overhauling at .594 and the 424 at .592

The difference of the .002 could be due to differences in wood contracting, but minimal at best.

I've recently purchased a Conn clarinet with a serial number starting with 424N - would you know what "vintage" it is ? Your post was the first I've seen with anything relating to that serial number.

as a highly seasoned jazz clarinet player-i can attest that the 424n is a fantastic jazz horn. i recently picked up a very low milage closet 424n and after a re pad its awesume. even the orig case is odor free!

I also resemble Pete Fountain in his later years. A bandmate commented "Do you know you look just like Pete Fountain?" I felt the beginning of a flush of pride until he added "Pity you can't play the clarinet, though."

I finally worked up the nerve to attempt the Conn 424N that had recently returned from being overhauled together with the Van Doren 5JB. wow, that's one lethal combination. It provides the 424n with an increase in both its power and its adaptability. as if there was room for improvement! fmc4me employee login

The distinctions are hardly noticeable at all. In contrast, the 424N does not have a little medallion in the colour gold set within the bell like the 444N does. The bridge key protection function was only available on the 444N; the 424N lacked this particular feature. There may be other distinctions between the instruments that I am unaware of, but in terms of their acoustic properties, they are almost identical. receiptify spotify

Actually, the medallion came in two colors...gold and silver.

I read somewhere about the Conn 444N bridge key protection "ring" and I believe I got a decent picture of it.

I'm posting this in case there is one other person besides myself who doesn't know what this feature looks like.
