 Francois Louis ligature

I have an older Francois Louis ligature that has a single tightening screw opposite the reed with a "floating" plate that holds the reed against the table. How close to the butt end of the reed should that plate be placed? Just wondered what experience any Francois Louis users have had with ligature placement.

I have similar styled ligatures, and find that positioning the plate from mid way on the butt to slightly toward the bottom works best. Positioning these ligature high on the reed just seems to kill the sound completely.

Of course the bottom line should come from the results you get from your own experimentation.

You can use the ligature lines on the mouthpiece as a guide.

Bruno,

You bring up a very interesting point. For me, I find that the lines of ligature on a mouthpiece are by far the more arbitrary measure of what is going on.

As you know reeds come in all sorts of different vamp lengths. If you took the reed brand with the longest vamp vs one with the shortest and positioned the ligature right at the line of ligature, you would NOT maximize the potential of your long vamped reed.

But this is EXACTLY why we experiment rather then take ANYTHING as gospel.

That's right, Paul. Those lines only tell us where our ligature is at that moment. In order for them to provide THE guide to placement, there might have to be lines all up and down the body of the MP!
