 B & H 1010 barrel
Author: Tony F

The director of a community band I play in was telling me about a barrel she once had for her 1010. It was a "Fat Boy" style, and was made by Selmer, with Selmer markings. Unfortunately it was lost when she relocated. She says it was a wonderful barrel which fixed some of the tuning issues on the 1010, and produced a tone which the standard barrels cannot equal. Has anybody heard of these?

I can honestly say that my new FatBoy barrel does improve my sound.......

I bet Dr. Segal could come up with a barrel that would work...

In all my years I have never heard of, or come across a Selmer 1010 barrel.
The standard 1010 barrels were relatively fat by French standards and the barrels on the Peter Eaton wide bore Elite are even fatter.
I can't imagine that the "fatness" would have any effect on tuning although could certainly influence the tone.
I suspect that any effect on tuning would be due to the bore and of course many of the Selmers of the 1920s/30s/40/s had pretty large bores anyway to it was probably a barrel taken from one of those.

The widest Selmer barrel available is for the Recital which is wider than the diameter of the top of the bell socket at its widest (the lower socket ring is around the same diameter as a regular bell socket ring), but has a considerably small bore.

The joint diameters of Recitals are the same as the bell socket and parallel all the way along their length, so they weigh a ton compared to standard diameter clarinets which flare out slightly at the top end of the top joint and considerably more towards the bottom end of the lower joint.

Selmer London offered some strange barrels - notably a clear Perspex one.

The opinions I express are my own.
