Hiya,
I'm also a fellow Clarinet player but the problem im having is with my newly rented Bassoon!!!
I have always wanted to play the Bassoon and finally this weekend i deicided that I would the only problem is, I dunno how to play!!! It is nothing like a Clarinet!
Can anyone tell me where I can find easy fingerings to help me? (i have tried the ones here at sneezy but i find them confusing)!!!
What key the Bassoon is in and anything that will help!!!
Also do you play to the side of your legs or between!!!
Thanxs in Advance!

The bassoon is in concert pitch. I don't know how to help you with fingerings except try to find a chart somewhere. Basic fingerings are pretty close to clarinet.
Third space E (bass clef) is W1 (or whisper key and index finger of left hand). Eb can be played W1-3 (not the standard fingering, but easier to explain than trying to tell you which thumb key to press). D is W1-2 (sounds sort of like clarinet, doesn't it!) C is W1-2-3. That will get you started.

I have only seen one person play it between the legs, I think that would be a bit awkward.... every one else played to the right side.......
fingerings, I picked up a book that has all fingerings in it for about 7 or 8 dollars
it has all the woodwinds, brass, strings and even drum stuff...... fits in the pocket nicely.....
Have a blast..... I think you will.....
Mike
PS:
been told ( havnt verified it yet ) that if you double on instruments, you have a better chance of getting scholarships ..... and if you double on a double reed or other non-basic instruments, you have a better chance.... if any one can confirm or denie, I would like to know.....
thanks

Go to a band store and get a beginner's book. These will have the basic fingerings and will only have a few alternates. That way you won't get confused by a plethora of alternates.

If you have the chance, lessons would answer your questions, even a few would help. I guess by now you know that the embouchure for double reed is much different from that for clarinet. And watch that reed, there is no protection for it from bumps and brushing things. As reed caps are not possible, remove and store it in a case when the horn is sitting.
And yes Mike, double reed players are almost always in short supply, and therefore have many opportunities, and the more instruments you play (within reason) the more demand for your services.

I'm surprised if your basson is not a Heckel system or german system. French basson are played only in France (or almost). You can compare with a good picture from the Fox web site:
http://www.foxproducts.com/default.htm
pictures of French bassons, see:
http://bassoonmania.virtualave.net/index.shtml
If you definetely have a French basson, fingerins are at
http://idrs.colorado.edu/bsnfing/finghome.htm
good luck with your basson, it's a wonderful instrument!!

What few times I've tried to make "funny noises" on a buffoon, I just tried out different fingerings [thumbs in particular] as if it were a Albert-Muller cl and found I could run scales [poorly!!]. As said, its in C, bass clef, all jokes aside, it can be played beautifully with its unique tonality, listen to PBS and CD's. Don

IDRS(International Double Reed Society) seems to have Bassoon fingering chart and an article on fingering comparison of different systems.
http://www.idrs.org/
However, it is necessary for you to become an IDRS member to look up them.
