I recently made it into a local orchestra on clarinet and i need tips or any way to help me improve my playing. I am an avid bass clarinet player but i had to try out on clarinet because the other two quit. I saw one of the pieces we were going to play and was a bit overwhelmed. I need to get into the gist of things once again.

The best way of getting the help you want is to schedule a few lessons with a competent local clarinet player.
The next (by a long distance) best way is to ask specific questions here. What needs to improve? What music are you playing in the orchestra? What about it is overwhelming you?

Well since i play bass clarinet a lot, i don't have the melody. I usually just play the bassline and sometimes a melody. But seeing clarinetists, i can tell they have the melody most of the time. i need to improve the changing of non melody, to melody.

If its a question of phrasing, you must listen. Listen to as many pro groups as you can. When in orchestra listen to your "new" section,,flute and oboe.
As a bass we must blend with the other bass instrument and rarely stick out. If you are first clarinet you must blend with the high winds and be prepared to "stick out" more often.

What I love about playing in orchestras is the variety and challenge of it. Yes, sometimes the clarinets are playing melody or even solos. They are called upon to add their particular color to the orchestral palette. But then as an orchestral wind player you also must blend with various other players, sometimes it is the bassoons, or the flutes, other times the French horns or violas. So many combinations to choose from. At times the musical situation requires you to play way louder than what the dynamic marking says....sometimes way softer. Plus the music you get to play is outstanding. What it comes down to is listening, so have faith in your abilities, listen and enjoy the ride!

Yeah that's what my director was telling me about. Playing bass i had to blend in with the tubas and cellos/basses. Same thing with phrasing. I am first so listening to the flutes and oboes will hopefully help me.

I sit right about in the center of the woodwinds and brass. It's a weird layout but it works. I get a good listen from about every wind instrument. I suppose i'll get better as i keep going. This will require more practice but soon i'll have it down. Thanks.
