Mouth piece with wild red lines
Author: RonD

Hello,
I was looking at a clarinet and sax book published out of England
in 2004.
In the clarinet photographs it shows the clarinet
being equipped with a black mouthpiece, but, it is full of tiny red lines in different shapes
the lines are actually not unlike a Jackson Pollock painting.
Is anyone familiar with the maker of this mouthpiece?
About mouthpieces,
the Yamaha 255 is shipped in North America with the 65mm barrel to be played at
A440.
When buying an aftermarket mouthpiece, do I need to ask for
it to be made for A440?
Someone here mentioned that the genusa mezzo could be purchase at either 440 or 442.
but on their site, it does not mention this.
Nothing on Fobes site about the debut being either.
Thank You
Ronald

The pitch designation for mouthpieces just means that one will generate a slightly higher pitch. This affects the relationship amongst the note of the HORN more than overall pitch (A=440) so you need to be careful about this.

As for the Genusa, Ben Redwine makes a shorter (yes, the length of the mouthpiece is shorter) mouthpiece to achieve a higher pitch. I know for a fact he does this for the original Genusa Excellent, but probably also does this for others at request. Just contact him directly about what you are trying to achieve.

It sounds like the Vandoren 2 Tones mouthpieces.

I think you're right, Opie. There was one on eBay recently asking $70 but it didn't sell. I call that material "Early Ebonite Bowling Ball" or "Parker Pen Mottled Big Red"........
