So, if barrels are so important for tone and tuning, and the bore profiles (reverse taper, conical, hourglass, etc) and sizes are being discussed so much, why so little attention is paid to sockets?
just went through a handful of barrels, and the variations in UJ and MPC socket depth are staggering, esp in comparison to the length of corresponding tenons.
We are talking about 1.5-2mm pockets even when barrel is fully pushed.

Yes, I was actually surprised to learn recently that the top tenon on a Selmer 10G is a hair longer than the tenon on an R13. The result is that a Buffet barrel, which has the same "Moennng taper" as the OEM 10G barrel, is effectively slightly longer than its nominal length when used on a 10G, since socket of the Buffet barrel hits the end of the tenon before it can fully seat on the shoulder of the section. The difference is nearly a millimeter.

That is why I always include the caveat with my barrels that the mouthpiece may sit "proud" of the barrel, and the barrel may sit proud of the upper joint, so that there is no internal gap.
If you find a gap internally, use a tuning ring to limit the dead space.
Yes, tenons vary a great deal. This is more notable on some Selmer models.

These pockets are sometimes good for the sound. I think the inconsistency is less the fault of the barrel makers and more the fault of there being so many different makes/models of clarinets.

yes the MPC pocket can make it sound clearer/brighter.
unfortunately it also effects tuning for low left C-E.. not good!
